Inside the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 Theater

Qualcomm Chairman and CEO Dr. Paul Jacobs introduced the world to the new Snapdragon 800 processor series this week at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. This new chip is designed to deliver up to 75% better performance without compromising battery life. The new chip also adds tons of multimedia features. It can actually deliver 7.1 surround sound through headphones — allowing you to take your home theater with you on the go.

Its new multimedia features — including Ultra HD video playback and 7.1 surround sound — are killer. To showcase these enhanced multimedia capabilities, Qualcomm built a soundproof, tricked-out theater at their CES booth. Here's a taste of what you can see if you're in Vegas – or a suggestion for how to build an amazing theater system in your house.

The theater seats nine in cushy leather chairs. At the head of the room is a massive 84-inch Ultra HD display. What's playing: a 2K trailer for the upcoming movie Pacific Rim theatrical trailer and an additional sizzle real in Ultra HD. The clips are playing not on a huge theater system, but on a tablet powered by a Snapdragon 800 processor.

The room is also outfitted with a 7.1 surround sound speaker system.  A demonstration screen shows the mapping of 7.1 audio channels — you hear and see where the audio is coming from.
