Qualcomm Announces Advanced Connectivity Solutions Drive Broad Ecosystem Adoption of 4G LTE Modems for IoT in Smart City, Commercial and Industrial Applications

Qualcomm Incorporated (NASDAQ: QCOM) today announced that its subsidiary, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., has secured more than 100 design wins across more than 60 original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and module OEMs based on its MDM9x07 chipset family comprised of the Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ X5 LTE (9x07) modem and MDM9207-1 modem for the Internet of Things (IoT). The flexible chipset family offers security-focused and optimized cellular connectivity, as well as edge processing for a large array of devices and systems within the IoT. These modems are designed to address customer connectivity and power challenges in a wide range of use cases including in smart cities, commercial applications and industrial designs. These uses include smart energy & metering, building security, infrastructure, industrial control and automation, retail point of sale, asset tracking, medical, lighting and aftermarket telematics.

The Snapdragon X5 LTE modem (9x07) with All Mode capability, supports LTE Category 4 download speeds up to 150 Mbps. The MDM9207-1 modem offers LTE Category 1 support for up to 10 Mbps on the downlink, power save mode (PSM) and up to 10 years of battery life from two AA batteries. These modems are designed to be compatible with major cellular standards across the globe, and include Linux OS support, ARM Cortex A7 processor, pre-integrated support for Qualcomm® VIVE™ 802.11ac Wi-Fi with MU-MIMO technology, Bluetooth 4.2, Bluetooth Low Energy, and integrated GNSS. Engineered to offer design simplicity, this chipset supports scalable software reuse across the chipset platform in order to reduce design complexity, ease development costs and enable faster time to commercialization.

Commercial IoT devices based on the Snapdragon X5 (9x07) and MDM9207-1 LTE modems are available today with others expected to continue shipping. Module OEMs are expected to launch MDM9206-based Cat M1 capable modules in early 2017. A software upgrade for Cat NB-1 is expected to be available shortly thereafter.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 600E and 410E Designed for Embedded Computing, Internet of Things Applications Now Widely Available

Qualcomm Incorporated (NASDAQ: QCOM) today announced that its subsidiary, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., is introducing the Snapdragon 600E and 410E processors, for embedded applications in many verticals such as digital signage, set-top-boxes, medical imaging, point of sale systems, industrial robotics, and other Internet of Things (IoT) related applications. Qualcomm Technologies has utilized its mobile investment in Snapdragon processors to introduce solutions for product categories beyond smartphones. The Snapdragon 600E and 410E are being made available globally by third party distributors, initially through Arrow Electronics, for a minimum of 10 years from the Snapdragon 600 and Snapdragon 400 (respectively) product families’ first commercial sampling. This is the first time stand-alone Snapdragon processors are available by distributors, making them accessible in a variety of quantities to manufacturers of all sizes for embedded computing and IoT products.

The introduction of the Snapdragon 600E and 410E processors, along with their global availability by distributors, is an important extension of the Snapdragon embedded product portfolio and its ability to address the needs of highly fragmented consumer, enterprise and industrial categories. The Snapdragon embedded portfolio has a tiered offering that includes development boards, commercial-ready modules, as well as the discrete processors for chip on board designs. Qualcomm Announces Broad Support for Galileo Across Snapdragon Processor and Modem Portfolios

Qualcomm Incorporated (NASDAQ: QCOM) today announced that its subsidiary, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., is supporting the European Galileo Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) broadly in its product portfolios. While Qualcomm Technologies began implementing hardware support for Galileo several years ago in select chipsets, this announcement signals the mobile industry’s first pervasive, end-to-end location-services platform for smartphone, computing, infotainment, telematics, and IoT applications.

With these optimized software enhancements, the Qualcomm® IZat location services platform now utilizes up to six satellite constellations concurrently without incremental device hardware or cost. Users now benefit from more than 80 different satellites when calculating global position for navigation or location-based applications. The addition of another GNSS is intended to provide more accurate location performance faster time-to-first-fix, and improved robustness all over the world, particularly in challenging urban environments where the combination of narrow streets and tall buildings can reduce accuracy.

This feature is integrated in the latest Qualcomm® Snapdragon 800, 600, and 400 processors and modems. Galileo will be supported on smartphones and compute devices with the appropriate software release on Snapdragon 820, 652, 650, 625, 617, and 435 processors, automotive infotainment solutions utilizing Snapdragon 820A, and telematics and IoT solutions with Snapdragon X16, X12, X7, and X5 LTE Modems, and Qualcomm® 9x15 and MDM6x00 modems.

Qualcomm Announces Connected Car Reference Platform to Simplify Integration of Advanced Connectivity Technologies Into New Vehicles

Qualcomm Incorporated (NASDAQ: QCOM) through its subsidiary, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., today announced the Qualcomm® Connected Car Reference Platform aimed at accelerating the adoption of advanced and complex connectivity into the next-generation of connected cars. As a leader in automotive connectivity with more than 340 million chips shipped so far for products for over 20 automakers, Qualcomm Technologies developed a product designed to maintain pace with an ever-increasing set of automotive use cases facilitated by the latest advances in 4G LTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communications. The platform is also designed to solve for challenges such as wireless coexistence, future-proofing and support for a large number of in-car hardware architectures.

The Connected Car Reference Platform is built upon Qualcomm Technologies’ broad automotive product and technology portfolio, including Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ X12 and X5 LTE modems, quad-constellation Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) and 2D/3D Dead Reckoning (DR) location solutions, Qualcomm® VIVE™ Wi-Fi® technology, Dedicated Short Range Communications (DSRC) for V2X, Bluetooth®, Bluetooth® Low Energy and broadcast capabilities such as analog and digital tuner support using software-defined radio via Qualcomm® tuneX™ chips. In addition, the platform features in-vehicle networking technologies such as Gigabit (OABR) Ethernet with Automotive Audio Bus (A2B) and Controller Area Network (CAN) interfaces.

Highlights of the Connected Car Reference Platform design include:

  • Scalability: Using a common framework that scales from a basic telematics control unit (TCU) up to a highly integrated wireless gateway connecting multiple electronic control units (ECUs) within the car supporting critical functions such as over-the-air software upgrades and data collection and analytics.
  • Future-proofing: Allowing the vehicle’s connectivity hardware and software to be upgraded through its life cycle, providing automakers with a migration path from DSRC to hybrid/cellular V2X and from 4G LTE to 5G.
  • Wireless coexistence: Managing concurrent operation of multiple wireless technologies using the same spectrum frequencies, such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Bluetooth Low Energy.
  • OEM and third-party applications support: Providing a secure framework for the development and execution of custom applications.

The Connected Car Reference Platform allows automakers and their suppliers to explore, prototype and commercialize connectivity designs using modules and solutions offered based on Qualcomm Technologies’ roadmap.
