Key takeaways from the Snapdragon x Samsung Galaxy S23 series Reddit AMA

You’ve probably heard the news by now: The new Samsung Galaxy S23 Series is powered by the Snapdragon® 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy — the fastest Snapdragon ever. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy enables unparalleled performance, extreme gaming, professional level photo and video capabilities, and next-generation connectivity thanks to Qualcomm® FastConnect™. Simply put, the Galaxy S23 Series is epic.

Shortly after the collaboration was announced at Samsung Unpacked, representatives from Qualcomm Technologies and Samsung got together to host an “Ask Me Anything” (otherwise known as an AMA) on Reddit. The group included Jacs Wyatt (Head of Digital Media & Social Commerce at Samsung), Drew Blackard (VP, Mobile Product Management at Samsung), and Mike Roberts (VP, Global Product Marketing at Qualcomm Technologies, Inc.).

The discussion began with some humorous personal anecdotes — Jacs convinced her parents to let her have a car phone in her Jeep during high school, though it only ever served to get her into trouble, while Mike’s first smartphone (which he referred to as a “bag phone”) was meant strictly for emergencies because data was so expensive in the early days of mobile — before getting into the finer details of the latest evolution of the Samsung and Qualcomm Technologies strategic partnership.

Samsung and Snapdragon enthusiasts asked Jacs, Drew, and Mike a lot of great questions about the new mobile platform and the devices it’s powering. Here are the key takeaways from that discussion.

The Galaxy S23 Series is fast and powerful

Powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy, the Galaxy S23 series is more than 40 percent more powerful than the previous generation. The mobile platform features accelerated performance with uplifts to both the CPU and GPU, and the Qualcomm® Kryo™ CPU prime core frequency has been improved to 3.36GHz, making it the world’s fastest Snapdragon.

So, what does that mean for users? For starters, it means unparalleled connectivity, and truly stunning photo and video performance. It also means epic mobile gaming, with hardware-accelerated ray-tracing. Real-time ray-tracing enables lifelike graphics and can produce various effects that make for a more immersive gaming experience (bloom, motion blur, depth of field, realistic smoke and fog, etc.). The Galaxy S23 series is built for everyone — especially camera and gaming enthusiasts.

How does the power experience differ from the previous generation?

There are so many factors that determine the battery life of a smartphone. One important aspect is the cellular modem. The Galaxy S23 uses the Snapdragon X70 Modem-RF System — the world’s first AI-powered 5G chipset. The Qualcomm® 5G AI Suite enables breakthrough connectivity performance, with capabilities such as AI-enhanced channel state feedback and AI-enhanced mmWave beam management — or, put simply, a more reliable connection. Additionally, as battery life continues to be a key consideration for smartphones and other devices, the Qualcomm® 5G PowerSave Gen 3 technology suite helps to reduce power consumption and extend device battery life.

Does the Galaxy S23 offer expandable storage?

According to Jacs, Samsung saw the use of the expandable memory feature decline over the past several years — while also witnessing the growth of cloud storage options. As such, Samsung has increased the base storage options on their devices (256GB on the S23+/Ultra) while including seamless cloud storage connections through partners like Microsoft and Google.

What about the camera capabilities?

With the 200MP camera in the Galaxy S23 Ultra, you can capture so much more detail — especially when photographing landscapes. It can also function in 50MP or 12.5MP modes by binning the pixels together to create super pixels for capturing more light in low light situations. It’s both highly powerful and highly adaptable — which in turn makes it highly useful.

The vast majority of photographs and videos are taken with smartphone cameras. Why not make them as impressive as possible?
