All treats, no tricks: New devices and VR experiences

Leaves are changing colors, temps are cooling down, and another summer is in the rearview mirror. Fall is known as the “season of change” for good reason—it’s a time of transformation, progress, and new beginnings. At Qualcomm Technologies, we’ve been celebrating the season of change with exciting milestones and evolutions in the world of XR, like the recently unveiled Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 1 Platform, designed to enable next-generation VR and MR experiences. And that’s exactly what we’re doing with our friends at Meta, who just revealed that Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 1 will power the new Meta Quest Pro VR/MR headset.

Of course, it’s not all work and no play around here. We also made time to check in with our Snapdragon Insiders to see what they’ve been up to in the world of VR. Keep reading for a recap of our fall VR meetup and a look at the new tech powered by Snapdragon that’s fueling the next generation of MR and VR devices!

Snapdragon Insiders Meetup in VR

Earlier this year, we held our first VR meetup, giving Snapdragon Insiders around the globe the ability to connect and get to know one another while getting a firsthand look at the Snapdragon technologies making a splash in the world of XR. This month, we held our second meetup so the community could gather, kick back, socialize, and take a tour of the Snapdragon AltVR space. And of course, there was a nod to the season—costumes, jack-o'lanterns, and more. We even roasted marshmallows around a fire. Topics of conversation ranged from the tech our Snapdragon Insiders are loving these days to photography tips for the #30DaysShotOnSnapdragon challenge, hype for the upcoming Snapdragon Summit, and, naturally, all things XR. It was a great opportunity to talk tech with like-minded Snapdragon technology fans! A big thank you to all who attended, and we look forward to seeing you in VR again soon.

Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 1: Powering the Next Generation of VR and MR Devices

Keeping with the fall spirit of transformation, progress, and evolution, Qualcomm Technologies recently unveiled the platform that will power the next generation of VR and MR experiences. The Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 1 Platform builds on the previous generation of XR with new features: Including 30% improved thermal performance, 50% higher sustainable power, AI enhancements, and low latency Wi-Fi 6. You can expect full-sensory VR and MR experiences that reach new levels of immersion and realism in smaller, lighter form factors. And, with support for 8K 360-degree video and a frame rate of 60fps, the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 1 offers virtually pixelation-free image quality—even when zoomed in. With unparalleled power and performance, it’s safe to say that this platform is set to take work and play in the virtual realm to new heights.

Meet the Meta Quest Pro

The Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 1 was announced alongside the Meta Quest Pro, a new headset that runs on the platform and features 50% higher sustained power and 30% improved thermal performance. With 12GB of RAM, 256GB of storage and 10 high-res sensors, the Meta Quest Pro can support and enhance a variety of immersive experiences. Plus, the Meta Quest Touch Pro controllers are powered by the Snapdragon 662 Platform to enable self-tracking and ultra-low latency to help create avatars that more accurately reflect the wearer's face and eye movements.

We’re extremely excited to continue collaborating with Meta to create new ways to connect and break new ground in XR and immersive tech. Be on the lookout for more info about the Meta Quest Pro when it launches on October 25th!

From VR meetups to technology milestones, it’s safe to say we’ve been busy recently. The world of XR is fast-moving, and we’re working hard to continually improve Snapdragon XR technologies to ensure our partners and our community of developers using the Snapdragon Spaces XR Developer Platform have the tools they need to create mind-blowing experiences for audiences everywhere. In fact, in the premiere episode of the new Exploring the Metaverse YouTube series, Qualcomm Technologies’ VP & GM of XR, Hugo Swart and Snapdragon Spaces Lead & Senior Director, Product Management for Qualcomm Technologies, Brian Vogelsang discussed how Snapdragon Spaces is accelerating the future of XR. The second episode of the series also took an inside look at the collaboration between Qualcomm Technologies and Lenovo in XR and beyond. Check out Exploring the Metaverse if you’re interested in the tech that’s shaping the future of spatial computing!
