Just recently, tech companies, gamers, and developers alike collided at the 2013 Game Developers Conference in San Francisco. What makes this conference cool is that it’s actually centered around, well, fun. The tradeshow is designed to showcase the newest gaming technology, games, and anything that can potentially enhance a gamer’s experience. Below are a few announcements that caught my eye:
MOGA Game Controllers for Windows Phone
Although most smartphone games are controlled via touchscreen, a lot of people still prefer using a physical game controller when mobile gaming. You get more precision and screen real estate (since it’s not being hogged by your fingers). MOGA has solved the problem for mobile gamers who miss the physical controller with its line of game controllers that connect wirelessly to Android handsets (via Bluetooth). At GDC, MOGA announced that it’s releasing an SDK for Windows Phone so these smartphones games can add support for these controllers. Check out a demo here.
SoftKinect Brings Touchscreen Mobile Games to TV
SoftKinect showed off a camera that lets you control software using your body – similar to the Microsoft Kinect, although the company claims that it’s even more accurate. Representatives from SoftKinect told Engadget, “The sensor can accurately read individual fingers between four to fourteen feet.” Because of the device’s sensitivity, the company can bring games that were developed for touchscreen mobiles phones to TV. Engadget reported that they “had no trouble using it to pinch our way through a few levels of a mouse-emulated session of Angry Birds.” See a demo here.
Enhancements to Game Engines
Developers often shop around for game engines that let them create the most beautiful virtual environments. At GDC, there were a bunch of announcements surrounding improved game engines including Unity’s open beta program for Windows Phone 8.
