Whether you’re talking about 1080P vs. 4K Ultra HD resolutions, or AMOLED vs. LCD, display technology is a big selling point for many device manufacturers. Although the pixel count and display technology is of great importance, catchy marketing terms will only get you so far if the processor technology can’t keep up.
Qualcomm Technologies knows what it takes to make a great display look even better. Sheer horsepower aside, the Qualcomm Snapdragon Display Engine comes with the software and tools to help device-makers tune and calibrate their displays so that they look great even with tough lighting conditions, designed so colors are accurate and true to life, while providing the vivid experience others seek with special color enhanced modes.
The Xiaomi MiNote Pro, powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor, is a prime example of how Qualcomm Technologies’ hardware, software, and tools came together to make a great display, catapulting the device to the top of Anandtech’s display rankings.
Qualcomm TruPalette and Qualcomm EcoPix features are a collection of display technologies incorporated into many flagship devices, most recently the Nexus 6P from Google. These technologies are designed to improve the quality of the pixels the viewer sees and simultaneously extend battery life with various pixel and backlight color processing techniques.
Techniques to optimize the display include color gamut mapping, six color zone, and memory color. These are designed to work in harmony to make the full use of the wide color gamut of AMOLED and modern LCDs available today. If color mapping and adjustment aren’t done correctly, the viewer will experience undesirable color distortion, like the kind that affects skin tones (for example, a yellowish tint), and lose all the camera picture quality tuning efforts the device manufacturer put into the device.
Colors are simulated to demonstrate the effects of having proper and improper color processing
In addition to technology that is built into the processor, Qualcomm Technologies offers a display color management tool to device makers to help simplify the display tuning process.
Xiaomi engineer, Zhang Yuan, states that “it has been a great experience using Qualcomm Technologies’ display tools as they offer the right balance of flexibility and ease of use. This powerful display color calibration tool, along with their engineering support, were instrumental in enabling very accurate color reproduction in the recently released Xiaomi Mi-Note Pro.”
With the Mi Note Pro featuring this powerful combination of hardware and tools, Anandtech may have put it best when it wrote that the smartphone “reaches almost absurd levels of calibration accuracy.” And that’s exactly the reaction that you want out of every display.
