Mobile technology helps us to stay connected and be efficient when we’re on the go, and driving is about as “on the go” as you can get. That’s why Qualcomm Snapdragon Automotive Solutions are a natural fit for automakers looking to create breakthrough in-car experiences. We recently showcased the potential possibilities and capabilities of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 602A processor in the Qualcomm Maserati and Cadillac concept cars. Take GNSS location systems—now standard tools for modern drivers—but the concept of a 3D connected navigation system with lane detection-supporting graphic overlay takes that classic concept to the next level.
With this system, drivers can choose to see the 2D or 3D map in front of them, or they can select a cluster mode that shows real lane detection assistance with real-time graphical overlays that provides directional guidance on which way to turn next on the streets ahead. These 3D maps can be viewed on the center console infotainment screen, and directly in front of the driver in the cluster display.
The Qualcomm Adreno GPU integrated in Snapdragon processors is designed to support the high quality 2D and 3D navigation applications and power a stunning HD user interface. Our state-of-the-art hardware builds the graphic navigation overlays, which ultimately integrates with the 3D maps. Real time image processing on the Adreno GPU powers a lane detection feature by capturing raw frames of the actual route of the car. The GPU uses the intensity filter which detect markings on the road. Edge detection, which fits a straight line to the edge and estimates the vanishing point, is then applied. With this information, the GPU is able to construct an overlay. In the end, the graphics engine renders a high quality 3D map.
The 3D navigation system draws on multiple constellations of satellites with the Qualcomm IZat GNSS engine supporting multiple constellations (GPS, GLONASS, Beidou, Galileo) to pinpoint location information. In addition, while the Snapdragon CPU is actively used for image capturing, the Adreno GPU takes care of rendering of the images while the Hexagon DSP provides efficient image processing. This heterogeneous computing approach where tasks are distributed across different computing blocks is designed not only to be power efficient, but also performance optimized for real-time use cases such as these.
The Snapdragon 4G LTE modem is designed to support a lightning fast connection that allows the car to consume all of the information necessary for the 3D lane detection system, like GNSS data and 3D maps.
Overall, this system is designed to provide drivers with improved assistance in safely navigating towards their destination, and affords the driver the option to view high quality 3D maps on both the cluster and center console.
