Sprint made the HTC EVO 4G LTE official at a launch party held in New York City yesterday. The EVO 4G LTE might be Sprint’s most ambitious smartphone yet, boasting 4G LTE, a Snapdragon™ S4 processor, and HD Voice—a new technology that was lauded heavily at the start of the event. This will be the first device that will support HD Voice, a feature that is designed to provide fuller, richer-sounding voice calls - made possible by technology built into the Snapdragon processor. Sprint demoed HD Voice with a series of audio clips that showed significantly decreased background noise with its dual microphone array. The company also made numerous references to pin-drop clarity, a play clearly taken from its classic long-distance commercials.
The phone itself is sleek and exquisitely thin. I’m a proponent of big-screen phones, and not only does the EVO 4G LTE boast a 4.7-inch screen, but the 720p screen resolution (1,280-by-720) gives it the ammunition it needs to compete with other big-screen phones. It comes with all the bells-and-whistles you’d expect from a flagship phone, including a rear-facing 8 Megapixel camera, Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich), and an aluminum body design.
Thanks to a fast Snapdragon S4 processor featuring 1.5GHz dual-core CPUs, navigating my way around HTC’s custom user interface (Sense 4.0) was fast and fluid. This is also the first Sprint phone to get Beats Audio, which uses hardware and software to enhance the sound experience. The pot gets even sweeter with LTE onboard, making the EVO 4G LTE the first Sprint phone to tap into this network. Its 2000mAH battery is actually larger than the one found in the HTC One X (1800mAH), so battery life looks promising.
The HTC Evo 4G LTE will be available in the US for pre-order starting May 7, with a starting price of $199.99.
