Qualcomm Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), a leading developer and innovator of advanced wireless technologies and data solutions, today announced an agreement with Princess Mother's Medical Volunteer (PMMV) to officially launch the second Wireless Reach project in Thailand in celebration of His Majesty the King's 80th Birthday on Dec. 5, 2007.
This project will serve the medical needs of rural areas in nine provinces, including Nong Khai, Ubon Ratchathani, Nakhon Phanom, Mae Hong Son, Nan, Tak, Yala, Narathiwat and Pattani. Qualcomm, along with partners CAT Telecom Public Company Limited (CAT) and Huawei Technology Company Limited, are working together to provide EV-DO high-speed wireless services to fulfill the medical needs of the 49 PMMV sites.
Qualcomm will donate 49 notebook computers which will be supported by 49 EV-DO aircards and mobile phones donated by Huawei Technology for PMMV's operational sites in the nine provinces that are covered by CAT's EV-DO network.
“Today's launch of the second Qualcomm Wireless Reach project in Thailand demonstrates our continued efforts to enhance the country's economic and social development by providing greater wireless access to underserved communities in remote, rural areas which lack medical and educational resources,” said Kaneungjit Suriyathumrongkul, senior director of business development for Qualcomm Thailand. “We are also pleased to partner with industry leaders such as CAT Telecom and Huawei in fulfilling His Majesty the King's goals of providing easier and faster access to medical facilities. We are confident that patients living in these areas will be empowered by our joint efforts to return home healthier and quicker.”
PMMV's overall charter is to cure tuberculosis in rural areas. As part of His Majesty's goal to alleviate the suffering of Thai residents in these areas by providing easier and faster access to medical facilities, PMMV regularly sponsors patients with serious illnesses to treatment in larger, provincial hospitals. The wireless services enabled by the collaboration of Qualcomm and its partners will ultimately result in more effective communications between smaller and more established clinics.
“PMMV is delighted that Qualcomm, CAT Telecom and Huawei have joined forces to help achieve our nation's goals by providing better medical access to the underconnected population,” said Mr. Yooth Bhotharamik, Deputy Secretary General of PMMV. “In an age of wireless technology and the Internet, we are heartened by the possibilities it brings, and we are confident that high-speed wireless data services will assist authorities in helping the 49 remote rural sites in the nine provinces more effectively.”
“As a leading provider of EV-DO high-speed wireless data services in Thailand, CAT Telecom is honored to work with other industry leaders to assist PMMV in increasing its medical service provisions,” said Mr. Phisal Jophochaudom, president of CAT Telecom Public Company Limited. “CAT Telecom has always noted the importance of providing for those who are underserved, and we are wholeheartedly committed to ensuring that there are enhanced communications among PMMV units and their communities.”
“Huawei is delighted to partner with Qualcomm and CAT Telecom on a very invaluable second Wireless Reach project,” said Mr. Zhang Wei, Vice President of Huawei Technologies. “Huawei will be donating 49 mobile handsets and EV-DO modem cards to the nine provinces. This project is an illustration of our commitment to using wireless products and solutions to enhance the economic and social livelihoods of those who are underserved.”
