Qualcomm Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), a leading developer and innovator of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) and other advanced wireless technologies, today announced its BREW® Signature Solution for Gaming, a comprehensive gaming solution that packages together the key components to enable wireless service providers to deliver a compelling gaming experience on mobile handsets. A key component of the solution is uiOne™, which enables richer on-device discovery, publisher and franchise-specific micro stores, as well as support for game-based themes throughout the handset. In addition to uiOne, the BREW Signature Solution for Gaming, includes capabilities for purchase via Web sites and retail cards, in-game micro transactions and an exciting and powerful portfolio of native BREW games from top publishers and developers from around the world that showcase what 3D and 3G can enable. The BREW Signature Solution for Gaming supports multiplayer and community-based services, as these are necessary to further mobile gaming and are central to a combined console, PC, handheld and mobile gaming experience. The announcement came during Qualcomm's BREW 2006 Conference, being held May 31-June 2 at the Manchester Grand Hyatt in San Diego.
“Perhaps more than any other company, Qualcomm has successfully proliferated mobile gaming in wireless, supplying critical tools and support to publishers, developers, handset manufacturers and operators, as well as creating a proven revenue generating ecosystem,” said Rob Tercek, founding chairman of GDC (Game Developers Conference) Mobile and co-founder of MultiMedia Networks LLC. “Bottom line, what Qualcomm has done for mobile gaming and the wireless industry as a whole is to simply erase the conventional wisdom on what a cell phone can do, and the company continues to raise that bar again and again.”
With the BREW solution playing a large role in pushing mobile gaming to its current state, this new initiative from Qualcomm is an exciting step in an industry that is always moving forward. The strategy is designed to address the convergence of elements such as 3D, high-speed 3G networks, advanced chipsets, cross-platform design, multiplayer gaming and unifying gaming communities. One such tool just introduced by Qualcomm is the QX Engine™ software developer's kit (SDK), which is designed to provide developers with tools to take full advantage of all the OpenGL ES hardware-accelerated 3D graphics features available on Qualcomm's MSM™ chipsets. The QX Engine SDK provides the main tool and application program interface for developers to rapidly prototype high-performance 3D models and animation for gaming applications. The QX Engine enables artists using standard 3D modeling packages to create the content required to put together a compelling 3D game. Via the QX Engine SDK, the OpenGL ES hardware-accelerated 3D graphics features of the Company's MSM chipsets are accessible for BREW and other operating environments.
“Qualcomm is committed to advancing the future of mobile gaming. From kicking things off in 2001 by providing a viable end-to-end revenue-generating ecosystem, to our focus on 3D and 3G, Qualcomm continues to evangelize the benefits to the industry of cross-platform design, the proliferation of more gaming-friendly form factors and important strategies designed to address the needs of emerging markets,” said Bob Briggs, senior vice president and general manager for Qualcomm Internet Services. “We are gratified that the BREW solution has proven to be a powerful catalyst for mobile gaming around the world since, ultimately, it is the wireless consumers who will benefit from a more compelling gaming experience.”
The BREW solution drives the discovery and delivery of data services. BREW customers can benefit from several offerings which include: uiOne for rich, integrated and dynamic user experiences with fast access to high revenue services on wireless devices; deliveryOne™ for differentiated and tightly integrated, operator-managed support and delivery of advanced wireless data content and services; and marketOne™ for a quick-to-market, hosted, scalable content delivery service that includes media titles, flexible management and monetization, content provider settlement and business intelligence services. Qualcomm offers this comprehensive set of BREW offerings to meet the distinct needs of companies delivering mobile products and services around the world.
