Qualcomm Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), a leading developer and innovator of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) and other advanced wireless technologies, China United Telecommunications Corporation (China Unicom), China's major telecom operator, and the two parties' joint venture Unicom-BREW Telecommunication Technologies Ltd., today jointly announced more than two million of China Unicom's wireless subscribers have securely downloaded more than 25 million BREW-based applications since China Unicom's launch of BREW services in July 2003. This achievement marks yet another landmark milestone for the BREW solution since China Unicom announced 1.5 million downloads in June 2004.
According to the China Centre for Information Industry Development, a research firm in China, there have been more than 70 BREW handset models available to wireless subscribers in China since China Unicom launched BREW services, with sales of BREW devices totaling more than 4.5 million units. Unicom-BREW continues to be very active in attracting additional applications and developers and has reported that there are now more than 1,000 applications and more than 300 developers supporting the BREW platform on mobile devices available to China Unicom subscribers. Operators, publishers, developers and device manufacturers in China continue to realize growing revenues for wireless applications and services based on the BREW solution.
In honor of this important milestone, China Unicom and Qualcomm organized the “Bravo for BREW 2005” event, which brings together more than 200 representatives of the Chinese BREW community, including handset manufacturers, publishers, developers, operators and wireless subscribers, including Li Zhengmao, vice president of China Unicom and Dr. Paul E. Jacobs, CEO of Qualcomm. The event will be held on September 15, 2005.
In addition to recognizing the significant growth of BREW application downloads made available by China Unicom, the event also honors various members of the entire wireless value chain for notable achievements in the Chinese wireless data industry.
- BREW handset manufacturers will be honored for various achievements in handset design that further enable the development of high quality and advanced mobile devices. LG will be honored with the “Best Design Award,” Samsung with the “Most Models Award” and Daxian with the “Most Popular Model Award.”
- BREW publishers and developers also will receive honors, including PDAger with the “Award of Creativity,” Sichuan Great Wall with the “Fastest Growing Award” and Tencent with the “Most Downloads Award.”
- Three of China Unicom's provincial branches in Shaanxi, Shanghai and Guizhou will be awarded the “Best BREW Business Development Award,” for the facilitation of the availability of BREW products and services in their various regions.
- Three of China Unicom's subscribers will be honored with the “Golden Thumb Award” for the most BREW applications downloaded to their individual mobile devices.
“China Unicom's CDMA network has achieved breakthrough development in the past year,” said Zhengmao. “The 25 million downloads show the booming popularity of BREW applications and content. China Unicom will continue to work closely with Qualcomm and other partners to provide strong support to developers and handset manufacturers, and deliver high-technology, high-quality and value-added services to our customers.”
“The wireless Internet is taking off in China, exemplified by the more than tenfold growth of BREW application downloads by China Unicom's wireless subscribers in the past year,” said Jacobs. “It is an exciting time to experience the growth and momentum of China's wireless data market. The uptake of BREW application downloads that has taken place since the BREW launch is a testament to the top-notch work and ongoing joint efforts throughout the wireless value chain in China, from operators and handset manufacturers, to publishers and developers.”
