Qualcomm Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), pioneer and world leader of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital wireless technology, congratulates Cellular One, a leading provider of wireless communications, on its commercial launch of CDMA2000 1xEV-DO services in Bermuda. The third-generation (3G), high-speed data network, marketed under the name “ONE@home” will be available to customers throughout the island. The rollout of CDMA2000 1xEV-DO will enable Cellular One to offer high-speed data applications and services to its subscribers, providing them instant access to the information they need wherever they may be.
“We are very pleased that Cellular One has commercially launched its CDMA2000 1xEV-DO network, becoming the first operator in Bermuda to offer wireless high-speed data services,” said Jeff Jacobs, president of global development for Qualcomm. “With this deployment, Cellular One now is able to offer services comparable to home or office broadband connections, and allows users to quickly download content such as music and video files.”
“We are very excited to offer full 3G services and provide our subscribers with an enhanced wireless experience,” said Michael Leverock, chief operating officer, Cellular One. “There is an increasing demand for high-speed data and CDMA2000 1xEV-DO will help fulfill our customers' right to enjoy the most recent and advanced mobile services available in Bermuda.”
Cellular One has been offering true 3G services since its deployment of CDMA2000 1X network in August 2003, including compelling wireless data applications and services based on Qualcomm's BREW® solution, since September 2004.
CDMA2000 1xEV-DO is a data-optimized evolution of CDMA2000 1X that provides multi-megabit per second peak rates and average rates of hundreds of kilobits per second at a lower cost per bit than any other 3G technology available today, an increasingly important factor as wireless services become richer in content. Qualcomm supports CDMA2000 1xEV-DO with a broad range of chipsets and system software solutions, such as the MSM5500™, MSM6500™, MSM6550™, MSM6800™ and MSM7500™. These highly integrated chipsets enable a variety of wireless devices, including wireless handsets, camera phones, PDAs and PC cards for use in laptop and handheld computers, and an array of applications meeting the needs of businesses and consumers.
CDMA2000 1xEV-DO technology enables wireless operators to harness the advanced feature set of Qualcomm's Launchpad™ suite of technologies, encompassing advanced multimedia, connectivity, position location, user interface and removable storage capabilities by providing compelling data services to users across all market segments.
