Qualcomm Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), the leading provider of wireless data solutions, today announced that Swift Transportation has signed an agreement to equip its fleet of trailers with Qualcomm's T2 Untethered TrailerTRACS asset management solution. Installation of the T2 Untethered TrailerTRACS solution will enable Swift to optimize trailer utilization by tracking the location and status of each of its trailers at any time, reducing trailer to tractor ratio and increasing driver satisfaction.
"Swift has grown to be one of the most well-regarded carriers in the nation through a consistent dedication to meeting its customers' needs," said Chris Wolfe, president of Qualcomm Wireless Business Solutions. "The deployment of Qualcomm's T2 Untethered TrailerTRACS solution is another example of this commitment, allowing Swift to enhance loss prevention."
The T2 Untethered TrailerTRACS asset management solution provides near real-time positive tractor/trailer identification, trailer location and optional cargo and door-status data, in addition to mobile-based geofencing. T2 uses standard third-generation Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) and analog cellular technology to provide a broad North American coverage footprint to deliver automatic GPS location reports and alert data from optional cargo and door sensors when tethered or untethered. Trailer management data from the T2 system can be integrated with dispatch and operations software using Qualcomm's AS/400 trailer fleet management software, allowing fleets to better analyze and plan trailer usage.
"Swift has used Qualcomm's OmniTRACS for years to increase productivity in its fleet of trucks," said Jerry Moyes, chief executive officer, Swift Transportation. "The T2 Untethered TrailerTRACS solution will greatly expand our ability to optimize the productivity of our entire fleet of trailers, and further improve our already industry-leading 98.9 percent on-time rate."
Swift is the holding company for Swift Transportation Co. Inc., a truckload carrier headquartered in Phoenix. Swift's trucking subsidiary operates the largest fleet of truckload carrier equipment in the United States with regional operations throughout the continental United States and Mexico.
Since 1989, Qualcomm has provided its tethered tracking system to more than 35,000 trailers within the NAFTA region.
TrailerTRACS provides trailer ID, drop-and-hook notification, location, status and information when connected to an OmniTRACS® equipped tractor. The T2 untethered trailer tracking solution offers these same features, plus a variety of additional options, including door and cargo sensors, geofencing, over-the-air update capabilities and visibility of assets and loads whether or not a trailer is connected to a tractor. With additional sensors, the T2 unit works well in intermodal environments, allowing for tracking when under foreign power, truck or rail.
