Qualcomm Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), a leading provider of wireless data solutions, today announced the commercial release of its T2™ Untethered TrailerTRACS® Asset Management Solution for private fleets and for-hire carriers. The T2 Untethered TrailerTRACS solution is an advanced, stand-alone satellite/cellular system that offers rapid-status visibility into trailer locations and operational events and provides vehicle position reporting for improved fleet utilization and security. Features include sophisticated on-board hardware, advanced power management, complete network services, cargo and door sensors and data integration capabilities using state-of-the-art, multimode communications.
The T2 Untethered TrailerTRACS solution allows carriers to track their assets continuously and accurately regardless of whether the tractor is attached to the cargo trailer. Furthermore, additional ancillary sensor capabilities provide the exact position, time and date of trailer-related activities, such as whether the trailer is loaded or empty or when a door is opened or closed.
“Qualcomm is dedicated to providing our customers with an untethered trailer management solution that gets their loads to each destination safely, securely and efficiently,” said Chris Wolfe, president of Qualcomm Wireless Business Solutions. “Enhanced asset visibility and time critical status information means that there will be less time and money spent searching for trailers or showing up for a trailer that’s in the wrong status.”
As cargo theft continues to be a multi-billion dollar cost to industries, the T2 Untethered TrailerTRACS solution helps prevent theft from happening by sending alerts when a trailer makes unauthorized drops and unauthorized door openings, and provides tracking to find a stolen trailer regardless of whether it is attached to a customer’s tractor or left in a yard unattended.
This month Qualcomm begins field testing the T2 Untethered TrailerTRACS solution with three customers as part of a Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) operational field test for a cost-benefit analysis on the productivity, safety and security benefits of untethered trailer tracking. Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) is the prime contractor for the project with Qualcomm as the technology integrator. Trucking companies that will participate in the test include Super Service Inc., R&R Trucking, Inc. and Paschall Truck Lines Inc.
The T2 Untethered TrailerTRACS solution is installed on the nose of the trailer in a cavity-sealed enclosure, making it virtually invisible. Qualcomm is able to improve functionality of the system remotely by upgrading the unit’s over-the-air application management capabilities, without downtime or added labor. The solution is already integrated into many of the industry’s leading enterprise software systems. In addition, the T2 Untethered TrailerTRACS solution has an added auxiliary port for future sensor upgrades as they become available.
Qualcomm’s T2 Untethered TrailerTRACS solution helps carriers increase efficiency by automatically reporting the location and status of a trailer and freight in the US, Canada, and Mexico. Using the system, carriers eliminate the need to manually look for trailers, and optionally, can identify those that are empty and available. This information helps carriers optimize trailer inventory pools and reduce driver idle-time costs. The system’s optional door and cargo sensor helps carriers detect possible in-progress theft.
Carriers such as Schneider National Inc., Atlas Van Lines and National Freight (NFI) have chosen Qualcomm’s T2 Untethered TrailerTRACS solution to provide constant visibility of the movement of their freight and to improve internal equipment utilization capabilities.
