Qualcomm Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), pioneer and world leader of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) technology, today announced its new QPoint solution. QPoint leverages the power of Qualcomm's BREW solution and the Company's gpsOne hybrid Assisted GPS wireless location technology for mobile phones to provide the most complete end-to-end mass-market LBS solution available today. With QPoint, Qualcomm provides operators with flexible delivery options for Location-Based Services (LBS) — either through a hosted model or through channel partners.
"Qualcomm's QPoint solution leverages proven technologies to provide a highly precise, flexible solution for wireless operators who want to take advantage of the next big trend in wireless - location-based applications and services," said Gina Lombardi, senior vice president, marketing and product management for Qualcomm Internet Services. "QPoint provides options for wireless operators that help generate LBS revenues - from a hosted QPoint solution to customizable QPoint solutions available through channel partners worldwide."
The QPoint solution enables a variety of location-based applications, including peer-to-peer, locating points of interest, asset monitoring, mobile commerce and gaming applications.
"Untethered mobility, and hence location, are fundamental defining attributes of wireless. It is a given that over time, location sentience will be fully exploited by a wide range of business and consumer-centric mobile data applications," said Cliff Raskind, director, global wireless practice for Strategy Analytics, Inc. "A recent survey conducted by Strategy Analytics points to encouragingly high levels of interest in location-based services. For example, more than a third of the respondents in the United States and Western Europe registered strong interest in finding directions on their mobile device, up markedly from previous years. Strategy Analytics estimates that by 2008, consumer location applications will generate more than $8 billion in global service revenues."
Qualcomm offers operators in the Americas a hosted solution which provides a significant time-to-market advantage. Worldwide, QPoint Positioning Software is also available to channel partners to incorporate into server solutions for operator customers, with support from Qualcomm. In deploying the QPoint solution, operators and channel partners can tap into an established global location services market, supported by hundreds of applications developers, and millions of gpsOne-enabled handsets in use worldwide.
