SAN DIEGO - October 9, 2003 - Qualcomm Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), pioneer and world leader of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital wireless technology, today announced the unveiling of its expanded 3G Today Web site, www.3Gtoday.com. The site, developed and maintained by Qualcomm, provides users with a wealth of information on commercial third-generation (3G) CDMA2000 1X, 1xEV-DO and WCDMA (UMTS) wireless devices, networks and applications around the world. The expanded site highlights compelling 3G CDMA applications and services in the market today and provides new search features and sort functionalities.
The 3G Today Web site has evolved to reflect the significant global growth of 3G CDMA by focusing on the innovative commercial applications and services available today. Newly added applications and services categories include position location (LBS), audio and video media-on-demand, video conferencing, application downloading, multimedia, video and e-mail messaging, Internet access, and secure enterprise connectivity. An additional pricing and metrics area provides information on service pricing plans and operator metrics, such as average revenue per user (ARPU) growth, profitability and 3G CDMA network performance. The site now also offers enhanced views for commercial 3G CDMA operator listings, allowing users to sort and filter operator launches alphabetically, by technology, by country and by date, and see 3G countries on an interactive world map.
"It has been almost three years since SK Telecom launched the first commercial 3G CDMA network and two years since NTT DoCoMo started its WCDMA FOMA service," said Jeffrey K. Belk, senior vice president of marketing for Qualcomm. "Since then, we have seen impressive 3G CDMA growth with nearly 60 operators launching networks in over 30 countries, supporting well over 60 million reported subscribers around the world."
The original 3G today Web site was launched in March 2001, following the commencement of the first official IMT-2000 3G service, with the specific intention of highlighting commercial 3G CDMA operators and devices. Since then, more than 350 3G CDMA devices have been introduced worldwide, including megapixel camera and camcorder phones with brilliant high-resolution VGA displays, phones and smartphones with MP3-quality stereo sound and external SD card storage, wireless PDAs supporting major operating systems, and PC cards capable of up to 2.4 Mbps peak rates.
The 3G CDMA technology family provides high-quality and high-capacity voice services and high-speed packet data access. Video and multimedia content on-demand, assisted-GPS location services, video-conferencing and multimedia messaging, over-the-air application downloads and unlimited wide-area broadband access at flat rates are all available through today's 3G services.
