Qualcomm Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), pioneer and world leader of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital wireless technology, congratulates Verizon Wireless on its commercial deployment of CDMA2000 1xEV-DO service and applications in metropolitan Washington, D.C. and San Diego. The third-generation (3G), high-speed data network, marketed under the name BroadbandAccess, will be available to customers in these two markets beginning Wednesday, October 1, 2003.
BroadbandAccess offers typical data speeds comparable to home or office broadband connections and marks the first time that CDMA2000 1xEV-DO access has been made commercially available in major metropolitan areas in the United States.
The new CDMA2000 1xEV-DO networks enable wireless data customers in both cities to access the Internet or their corporate local area network (LAN) via a high-speed wireless wide area network (WAN) with a subscription to BroadbandAccess and the Verizon Wireless PC 5220 card. The networks retain the speed and security features of wireline access and can easily support demanding enterprise applications, such as sales force automation, customer relationship management and enterprise resource management. The technology also handles large file attachments, such as presentations, high-resolution graphics, video clips and music files.
The deployments of BroadbandAccess follow successful trials conducted by Verizon Wireless in Washington, D.C. and San Diego in 2002.
"Verizon Wireless is delivering on the promise of the high-speed wireless Internet," said Jeff Jacobs, president of global development for Qualcomm. "Subscribers in Washington, D.C. and San Diego are experiencing a new era of wireless connectivity. Whether they are mobile professionals who rarely see their office, or consumers who crave the benefits of mobility, CDMA2000 1xEV-DO services provide high-speed access wherever the user needs it with all the benefits of a broadband connection."
"As the industry leader in the deployment of wireless data services, we are excited to meet yet another milestone with our commercial launch of BroadbandAccess," said Bill Stone, vice president of marketing for Verizon Wireless. "The new service improves the productivity of our business customers by providing speed and security that mirrors their desktop environment plus the added benefit of wide area mobility."
CDMA2000 1xEV-DO is a data-optimized evolution of CDMA2000 1X that provides peak speeds up to 2.4 Mbps and typical speeds of 300-600 kbps at a lower cost per byte than any other 3G technology available today, an increasingly important factor as wireless Internet use grows in popularity.
Qualcomm is currently supporting Verizon Wireless' BroadbandAccess service with its MSM5500 and MSM6500 chipset and system software solutions. In addition to these chipsets, Qualcomm offers a broad range of solutions to handset and device manufacturers that support CDMA2000 1xEV-DO, including the MSM6550™ and MSM6800™. These highly integrated chipsets enable a variety of wireless devices, including wireless handsets, camera phones, PDAs, and PC cards for use in laptop and handheld computers, as well as a wide array of applications meeting the needs of businesses and consumers. The CSM5500™ and next generation CSM6800™ chipsets for CDMA2000 1xEV-DO base station equipment round out Qualcomm's product offering to deliver a complete end-to-end system solution and enable faster network migrations.
CDMA2000 1xEV-DO is compatible with cdmaOne™ and CDMA2000 1X networks, thus leveraging existing network deployments and enabling operators to obtain higher capacities and superior performance by optimizing for packet data services.
