China Unicom's CDMA network was launched in January 2002. Its first milestone of four million users came in October 2002. In 2003, Unicom has continued its growth with the rollout of CDMA2000 1X services, its planned nationwide launch of BREW-enabled data services, and the formation of a joint venture with Qualcomm, Unicom-BREW Telecommunication Technologies Ltd., to encourage the domestic developer community.
3G CDMA has been launched by 43 operators in 24 countries across Asia Pacific, Australia, Eastern Europe and the Americas. CDMA2000 1X operators are experiencing increased average revenue per user (ARPU) in data-related services, support from an expanded base of device manufacturers and myriad applications from an increasing number of content developers.
