Qualcomm Incorporated (NASDAQ: QCOM) today announced that two high school students, Chris Castello, a sophomore at Helix Charter High School, and Dorian Mattrey, a sophomore at La Jolla High School, are the winners of Qualcomm's "Wireless Technology Touchdown" contest. The contest called for creative ideas on how wireless technology can enhance the sport of football and/or the spectator experience. Winners will each receive two tickets to Super Bowl XXXVII on January 26, 2003 at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego and a $5,000 academic scholarship toward their college education. Qualcomm is also donating $10,000 to the math and science departments at the winners' schools.

When asked to develop an innovative wireless communication technology, device or application that could enhance football, students throughout San Diego responded with creative and inventive concepts. Castello's winning submission included a handheld device to assist in seat and facility location within the stadium, connecting to the snack bar, enabling people to order snacks from their seats and check football statistics or coaching strategies during the game.

Castello's device would allow fans to open up a seat-finder window, enabling them to quickly locate their seats and other areas, including concession stands, souvenir shops and restrooms. He believes his idea would greatly benefit the fans. "Upon arrival at the stadium, the first problem most people encounter is finding their seats. With my invention, navigating the stadium would be a breeze. The device would add to the delight of relaxing at the stadium and allow fans to further enjoy the game."

Winner Dorian Mattrey recommended development of a new handheld technology combined with a helmet camera to allow stadium fans greater interaction with the game. "The device would track the location of the football and each player real-time, providing any view the fan would like as well as stats, replays and game rules," Mattrey proposed. "The features would make the fan a part of the action and the game."

"We are thrilled with the enthusiastic response to Qualcomm's 'Wireless Technology Touchdown' contest," said Dr. Daniel L. Sullivan, executive vice president of human resources for Qualcomm. "Qualcomm remains committed to the improvement of math and science education, fostering creativity and innovation, and encouraging students to pursue high technology careers. We're pleased to provide Dorian and Chris with the opportunity to enjoy the 'Big Game' in San Diego, and contributions toward their future college education and respective high schools."

To participate in the "Wireless Technology Touchdown" contest, students with an interest in science, math, engineering and technology were encouraged to submit their ideas for a wireless communications technology, device or application that could be used to enhance the sport of football and/or the spectator experience.
