SAN DIEGO -- September 23, 2002 -- Qualcomm Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), pioneer and world leader of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital wireless technology, today announced that Verizon Wireless' Get It Now service is powered by Qualcomm's Binary Runtime Environment for Wireless™ (BREW) solution. Using the BREW platform on handsets and deploying the BREW Distribution System for over-the-air delivery and billing of wireless applications, Verizon Wireless is able to provide state-of-the-art wireless data services to its 30 million customers via their mobile phones.
Verizon Wireless launched BREW-based content and application services nationwide on June 17, 2002, making it the first carrier to offer U.S. customers over-the-air downloads of games, ringtones, information and entertainment applications using the BREW technology. With the launch of Get It Now, Verizon Wireless is making it easy for customers to personalize their mobile lifestyle with a range of Get Games, Get Going, Get Pix and Get Tones options. Customers who previously visited the "BREW Shop" on their handset will now see Get It Now on handsets, in-store and in a nationwide marketing program.
"Qualcomm's BREW solution has enabled us to easily and quickly deploy a complete, end-to-end solution for development and delivery of compelling wireless applications and services," said Jim Straight, vice president of Internet and data services for Verizon Wireless. "Qualcomm worked with us to tap into its BREW developer community and to provide the complete system necessary to deliver Get It Now services to our customers."
"Verizon Wireless' Get It Now service provides customers with cool applications not previously available on mobile phones," said Peggy Johnson, president of Qualcomm Internet Services. "They've made it easy and user friendly for consumers to get the applications and content they want, when they want. Verizon Wireless' launch of Get It Now is a testament to their leadership and commitment to providing industry-leading services to their customers via the BREW solution."
Deployments of the BREW solution continue as carriers throughout the world join Verizon Wireless and ALLTEL in the United States, KTF in Korea and KDDI in Japan in commercializing BREW-based services. Telesp Celular, the largest mobile phone operator in Brazil, has launched a BREW user trial. Globally, China Unicom recently announced its plans to launch BREW-based services in China before the end of 2002, and 15 carriers to date have indicated support for the BREW solution. Twenty-three BREW-enabled handsets are already available to consumers worldwide, and more than 1.8 million BREW-enabled phones have been activated by end users since November 2001.
About the BREW Solution
Qualcomm's BREW platform is a thin application execution environment that provides an open, standard platform for wireless devices. The BREW platform is part of a complete, end-to-end solution for wireless applications development, device configuration, application distribution, and billing and payment. The complete BREW solution includes the BREW SDK(tm) (software development kit) for developers, the BREW applications platform and porting tools for device manufacturers, and the BREW Distribution System (BDS) that is controlled and managed by carriers - enabling them to easily get applications from developers to market and coordinate the billing and payment process. Carriers' BREW-based services will enable consumers to customize their handsets by downloading applications over the air from a carrier's application download server. The BREW platform is a product of Qualcomm Internet Services (QIS), a division within the Qualcomm Wireless&Internet (QWI) Group of Qualcomm Incorporated.
