SAN DIEGO -- February 13, 2002 -- Qualcomm Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), pioneer and world leader of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital wireless technology, today announced that Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Ltd. (TSMC) has been honored as the Supplier of the Year for calendar year 2001 by Qualcomm CDMA Technologies (QCT). The QCT Supplier of the Year award recognizes a key supplier that demonstrates the highest delivery, quality and customer service performance throughout the calendar year for the Company's QCT division.
"We are pleased to announce that TSMC has earned the QCT Supplier of the Year award for calendar year 2001," said Lorraine Stamoulis Surnamer, senior vice president of procurement for QCT. "This award acknowledges TSMC's performance in all major areas, including quality, on-time delivery and customer service. QCT applauds TSMC's focus and drive to achieve their goal and this accomplishment. As a fabless semiconductor company, Qualcomm relies on the high-quality, and timely and consistent performance of development and manufacturing partners such as TSMC. For 2002, we anticipate the level of commitment from TSMC will continue to grow as we develop new designs and technologies."
QCT awarded TSMC the Pursuit of Excellence award for calendar 2000, recognizing TSMC as the most significantly improved among their peer foundry competitors. Upon receiving that award, TSMC made a commitment to achieve the Supplier of the Year award for 2001. TSMC steadily improved their overall Supplier Management Program (SMP) rating to first place for both halves of calendar year 2001, and has demonstrated the essence of Supplier/Customer partnership with their constant effort to do what is best for their customer across all functional support areas.
Qualcomm's SMP, now in its eighth year, was established to facilitate Qualcomm's supplier partnerships and focus its business with a limited base of qualified suppliers that excel in quality, provide superior delivery performance and deliver products at the lowest overall cost. Equally important is a demonstrated track record of continuous improvement. It is Qualcomm's goal to establish long-term partnerships with suppliers that meet these criteria.
"We are very proud to receive this award from QCT," said Rick Tsai, president and COO of TSMC. "We are committed to excellence by working closely with QCT to exchange ideas, solve problems and ultimately drive down total cost of ownership in our respective business, manufacturing and logistics processes. Qualcomm's Supplier Management Program provides tools to measure performance against expectations and enables us to work together to meet Qualcomm's customer requirements."
