Qualcomm CDMA Technologies Unveils Details on MSM6xxx Family of Next- Generation Integrated Circuit Solutions

Qualcomm Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), pioneer and world leader of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital wireless technology, today announced details on the Company's revolutionary new MSM6xxx family of CDMA Mobile Station Modem (MSM™) integrated circuits and system software. Qualcomm CDMA Technologies (QCT) developed this family of products to support key multimode, multiband second-generation (2G) and third-generation (3G) wireless technologies, and to enable true wireless global roaming. All members of the MSM6xxx family of integrated circuits and system software feature QCT's new radioOne™ direct RF-to-baseband conversion technology, which cuts the total number of radio components in half, resulting in significant handset bill-of-materials (BOM) savings.

Each member of the MSM6xxx family:

  • Incorporates various features of QCT's Wireless Internet Launchpad™ suite of advanced technologies, such as gpsOne™ position location capabilities featuring SnapTrack™ technology, Bluetooth™ connectivity capabilities, UMTS Subscriber Identity Module (SIM), Removable Universal Identity Module (R-UIM) and multimedia features such as Qtunes™ audio decoders, including support for Moving Pictures Expert Group (MPEG) Layer-3 (MP3), enabling high-quality music reproduction, and Compact Media Extension (CMX™) software for MIDI, text and graphics-based multimedia applications
  • Interfaces to QCT's Mobile Station Processor (MSP™) family of application processors for fast development of tightly integrated smart phone, automotive and other Internet appliances, providing support for a variety of applications, including streaming video using PacketVideo's PVPlayer™ MPEG-4 streaming media decoder
  • Interfaces with QCT's radioOne Zero Intermediate Frequency (ZIF) or direct conversion architecture, which converts incoming RF signals directly to or from baseband analog signals. This new technology eliminates the need for large IF Surface Acoustic Wave (SAW) filters and additional IF circuitry
  • Supports the Binary Runtime Environment for Wireless™ (BREW™) applications platform

MSM6000™ solution, announced on March 12, 2001:

  • Optimized entry-priced 3G cdma2000 1x integrated circuit and system software
  • Optimizes handset BOM, offering equal or lower pricing of 3G cdma2000 1x handsets compared with standard GSM terminals
  • Optimized system solution, allowing manufacturers to rapidly design new entry-level handsets for the 3G market
  • Leverages significant traffic capacity benefits of cdma2000 versus GSM
  • Fully backward compatible with IS-95A/B
  • Optimized to support voice and basic data capabilities
  • Two-way Short Message Service (SMS)
  • Offers seamless migration path to 3G services and applications
  • Sample shipments expected in early calendar 2002, with production quantities expected in the second quarter of calendar 2002

MSM6050™ solution:

  • Mid-tier 3G cdma2000 1x integrated circuit and system software
  • Provides all of the features of QCT's MSM5105 with improved processing power, plus radioOne architecture, gpsOne position location capabilities and key Wireless Internet Launchpad multimedia features
  • Supports IS-2000, with up to 153 kilobits per second (kbps) in the forward link
  • New QDSP4000™ architecture supports vocoders and other audio and entertainment applications
  • Sample shipments expected in the first half of calendar 2002

MSM6100™ solution:

  • Full-featured 3G cdma2000 1x integrated circuit and system software
  • Provides all of the features of QCT's MSM5100 with improved processing power, plus radioOne architecture and advanced Wireless Internet Launchpad multimedia (e.g., Bluetooth, Multimedia Card (MMC), etc.) and position location features
  • Supports IS-2000, enabling data rates of up to 307 kbps on both the forward and reverse links, and simultaneous voice and data
  • New QDSP4000 architecture supports vocoders and other audio and entertainment applications
  • Java accelerator
  • Sample shipments expected in the second half of calendar 2002

MSM6200™ solution:

  • QCT's second-generation Wideband CDMA (WCDMA) integrated circuit and system software with GSM and GPRS
  • Supports data rates of up to 384 kbps
  • Sample shipments expected in the first half of calendar 2002

MSM6300™ solution:

  • Supports 3G cdma2000 1x and GSM/GPRS
  • Supports data rates up to 307 kbps
  • Sample shipments expected in the first half of calendar 2002

MSM6500™ solution:

  • Supports 3G cdma2000 1x; cdma2000 1xEV for high-speed data, supporting peak rate transmission speeds of up to 2.4 Megabits per second (Mbps); and GSM/GPRS
  • Sample shipments expected in 2003

MSM6600™ solution:
