SAN DIEGO -- January 16, 2001 -- Qualcomm Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), pioneer and world leader of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital wireless technology, and IFR Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq/NMS: IFRS) today announced that they have entered into an amendment to IFR's existing CDMA test equipment license agreement with Qualcomm. Prior to the amendment, IFR's CDMA license covered only cdmaOne™ applications. With the amendment, IFR's CDMA license agreement has now been expanded to grant IFR a royalty- bearing license under Qualcomm's essential CDMA patent portfolio to develop, manufacture and sell test equipment for third-generation (3G) CDMA (WCDMA, cdma2000, TD-SCDMA) and cdma2000 1xEV applications. Under the terms of the amendment, IFR will pay Qualcomm ongoing royalties for 3G at rates no less than those for cdmaOne test equipment.
"Qualcomm is pleased to extend IFR's license," said Steve Altman, president of Qualcomm Technology Alliances. "By helping companies accelerate the rollout of third-generation wireless products and services worldwide, we expect IFR to contribute to the growth of 3G CDMA test solutions for the wireless industry."
"The development of new test solutions for the next generation of high-capacity, high-bandwidth wireless communication devices and infrastructure represents a major growth opportunity for IFR. The increasing complexity of 3G systems has created a corresponding demand on the test equipment industry for higher performance and greatly expanded functionality to handle the explosion of enhanced features and functions now being developed," said Jeffrey Bloomer, chief executive officer of IFR. "IFR is well positioned to address this opportunity, with our many years of wireless technology experience and established position as a test equipment vendor to Qualcomm and other leading wireless companies. This expanded license agreement is an important step forward in our strategy to become a significant player in this emerging market."
