SAN DIEGO -- November 28, 2000 -- Qualcomm Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), developer of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital wireless technology, today announced sample shipment of the RFR3300™, a radio frequency to intermediate frequency (RF-to-IF) front-end receiver designed for cellular, personal communications service (PCS) and Global Positioning System (GPS) signal processing. The RFR3300 device is the first front-end receiver in the industry to integrate GPS capability with CDMA, and is Qualcomm CDMA Technologies' (QCT) most highly integrated receiver to date.
The integration of a GPS receiver into a CDMA/AMPS receiver eliminates the need for an extra stand-alone GPS RF receiver. Together with Qualcomm's MSM3300™ Mobile Station Modem (MSM™) chipset and IFR3300™ baseband receiver, the RFR3300 device offers the most cost-effective and high-performance solution for position-location-enabled dual-band (PCS CDMA and AMPS) or tri-mode (cell CDMA, AMPS and PCS CDMA) phones using Qualcomm's gpsOne™ position location solution featuring SnapTrack™ technology. The gpsOne solution addresses the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) E9-1-1 Phase II requirements, and offers industry-leading availability and accuracy under the most challenging conditions, including concrete-and-steel high-rises, shopping centers and urban canyons. To date, over 30 U.S. wireless carriers have declared that they will use GPS-based solutions to meet their E9-1-1 Phase II requirements.

Qualcomm's RFR3300 device, a silicon germanium (SiGe) BiMOS radio frequency integrated circuit (RFIC) that provides high linearity with very low power consumption, integrates dual-band low noise amplifiers (LNAs) and mixers for downconverting from RF to CDMA and FM IF, and contains a dedicated LNA and mixer designed for downconvertingGPS signals from RF to IF. The RFR3300 receiver operates in the 832 MHz-894 MHz cellular band, 1840 MHz-1990 MHz PCS band and 1575 MHz GPS band. The RFR3300 device meets cascaded Noise Figure (NF) and Third-Order Intercept Point (IIP3) requirements of IS-98 and JSTD-018 for sensitivity, and two-tone intermodulation. The RFR3300 solution is also designed to meet the stringent sensitivity requirements for GPS-based position location technology.
The cellular LNA in the RFR3300 device offers gain control capability for improving dynamic range and performance in the presence of high levels of interference. Reducing the gain in the LNA also improves power consumption. Band selection and gain modes are controlled directly from the MSM3300 chip. The RFR3300 device is designed for use with voltage ranges from 2.7 V to 3.15 V, and is available in a 5 millimeter by 5 millimeter 32-pin BCC++ plastic package.
The gpsOne and SnapTrack Wireless Assisted GPS™ system improves upon conventional GPS by combining information from GPS satellites and from CDMA-based wireless networks to pinpoint a wireless handset. While traditional GPS receivers may take several minutes to provide a location fix, the gpsOne and SnapTrack system generally locates callers within a few seconds. The unique SnapTrack Location on Demand™ feature also ensures a caller's privacy, giving mobile phone users control over their own location information.
Complementing the RFR3300 solution is QCT's MSM3300 single-chip baseband processor modem and system software, which provides the highest level of integration of multimedia features available for mobile phones, and will enable the design of a new generation of CDMA handsets and data devices with rich feature sets and industry-leading performance. The MSM3300 solution provides exciting new technologies, including the gpsOne position-location solution and Bluetooth, as well as multimedia features such as Qtunes™ Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG-1) Layer-3 (MP3) player software support and Compact Media Extension (CMX™) Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI)-based multimedia software.
RFR3300 sample shipments have begun, with production quantities expected in the first quarter of 2001.
