SAN DIEGO -- October 27, 2000 -- Qualcomm Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), the leader in mobile communications for the transportation industry, today announced an agreement with XATA Corporation (Nasdaq: XATA), a supplier of on-board computer systems for transportation companies, that enables XATA to offer Qualcomm Wireless Business Solutions' (QWBS) Satellite Communications Modem (SCM) with their SmartCom™ application suite and XATA ONBOARD™ information system.

Qualcomm's SCM provides two-way data communications between intelligent third-party hardware and business or operations software, allowing users to communicate, collect, and manage data from on-board computers or any device that interfaces with an RS-232 or J1708 port. XATA has combined the Qualcomm SCM with their XATA ONBOARD system and SmartCom application suite to provide an enterprise-wide, real-time logistics management solution for private fleet and other transportation market segments, delivering continuous and ubiquitous communications nationwide. This solution is currently available and will offer customers the ability to lower administrative costs while adhering to current and anticipated federal safety and operational mandates, including reporting driver hours of service and state line crossings for accurate fuel tax calculations. Messages and position reports will be processed through Qualcomm's state-of-the-art Network Management Center.

"Qualcomm is pleased to partner with one of the leading on-board application providers for the private fleet market," stated George Dunn, vice president and general manager for United States and Canadian operations for Qualcomm Wireless Business Solutions. "Our ability to offer real-time communications solutions to new segments continues to make Qualcomm a strategic leader in mobile communications."

"SmartCom's real-time notification is triggered by on-board exception conditions and events, which are defined and selected by users, ensuring only critical information is reported to fleet management. Due to the importance of this information, reliable message delivery is essential," said Tom Flies, senior vice president of product development for XATA Corporation. "Qualcomm's SCM will provide XATA customers with the proven technology and unmatched reliability required for exception-based communications."
