NEW ORLEANS -- February 28, 2000 -- Qualcomm Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM) today announced that it has acquired the Technology Development group of the United Kingdom-based TELLIT Communications Limited, a company with industry-leading expertise in European radio frequency design for handsets including Nordic Mobile Telephone (NMT) 450 technology, for approximately $20 million. TELLIT's research and development resources will be operated by a wholly owned subsidiary of Qualcomm, Qualcomm (UK) Limited. Qualcomm will use these European-based resources to design CDMA handsets, supported by Qualcomm's chipsets and system software, for operation in European frequencies. These handset designs will then be made available to Qualcomm's chipset customers to ensure CDMA handsets are available in a timely fashion should CDMA be deployed in these frequencies.
"TELLIT's talented engineering base with its extensive Radio Frequency experience will complement Qualcomm's CDMA development efforts," said Rich Sulpizio, president and chief operating officer of Qualcomm. "TELLIT has been very successful in pioneering the development of low-power mobile technology for the European market, and we look forward to utilizing this expertise to help accelerate the acceptance of CDMA worldwide."
"TELLIT's success with innovative R&D driven solutions in RF design will dovetail nicely with Qualcomm's world-leading CDMA expertise and paves the way for the introduction of CDMA into Europe," said John Masters, managing director of TELLIT.
NMT 450 is a wireless analog mobile telephonic standard operating at 450 MHz. Operators of NMT 450 systems will be migrating to digital technologies, including CDMA. The ability to adapt CDMA to European frequencies will enable operators to increase capacity, speed and quality over current technologies.
TELLIT, which was formerly the UK-based cellular handset design and manufacturing subsidiary of Radio Design AB of Sweden, was acquired in April 1999 by a consortium of private equity investors. TELLIT is the world's first company to design a cellular handset based on Low Emission Mobile Station (LEMS) technology. TELLIT recently launched the competitive A77 NMT handset, that is proving to be of great interest with European operators. TELLIT's headquarters are located in Farnborough, United Kingdom.
