SAN DIEGO -- May 6, 1999 -- Qualcomm Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM) and Transcommunications Incorporated today announced that Roberts Express, an Ohio-based company, will offer CabCARD® Personal Communications to all of its independent contractors. With 100 percent of their trucks equipped with the OmniTRACS® mobile information system, Roberts Express believes that CabCARD Personal Communications underscores its commitment to personal and family life as well as business operations.
"We are excited about the ability to offer CabCARD to our independent contractors and have had nothing but enthusiastic and positive responses from our operators," stated Virginia Albanese, director of safety, recruiting and contractor relations for Roberts Express. "We feel that CabCARD will help improve the quality of life for drivers on the road. Since it is hard to stay involved with family members while away from home, this tool will allow wives, husbands and children the ability to communicate with each other without having to go through our dispatch. In addition, CabCARD will allow fleet owners to stay in touch with their drivers."
CabCARD has experienced explosive growth since its introduction two years ago. There are now more than 100,000 drivers who have access to CabCARD communications services. "CabCARD gives the drivers flexibility in deciding for themselves the amount of use they choose," stated Phil White, president of Qualcomm Wireless Business Solutions. "We believe it provides additional comfort to drivers knowing that their families can always get in touch with them for any reason or emergency."
Introduced to the transportation industry in October 1996, CabCARD Personal Communications is a pre-paid service providing discounted long distance phone rates, voice-mail capabilities, driver e-mail and phone-to-e-mail messaging. The only service of this kind in the transportation industry, CabCARD allows Internet e-mail to be sent and received directly from the cab of the truck using the OmniTRACS and TruckMAIL™ mobile communications systems.
Headquartered in Chattanooga, Tenn., Transcommunications Incorporated develops and implements complex value-added telecommunications solutions, software and controlled access services for the transportation, retail, corporate travel, computer and software industries. Products include intelligent telecommunications network services, value-added voice response systems, software and prepaid and post-paid long distance services.
