Qualcomm Announces New Network Optimization Tool

SAN DIEGO December 08, 1998 Qualcomm Incorporated (NASDAQ: QCOM), pioneerand world leader of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital wirelesstechnology, today announced that a new network optimization tool for fieldtest engineers is now available. The Retriever™ pilot scanner/testphone provides technicians with portable, wireless over-the-air testing ofnetwork and handset performance over CDMA digital cellular and PCS networks.

"This product offers carriers unique capabilities for testing theirnetworks," said Tia Cassett, senior business manager of test equipment forQualcomm Consumer Products. "The retriever pilot scanner, with itsreal-time network analysis capabilities, provides unprecedentedfunctionality in a single, inexpensive package that offers maximumflexibility and portability."

The Retriever pilot scanner, available in 800-MHz and 1900-MHz versions,provides three network optimization functions for carriers. As a scanner,it can check all 512 PNs (cell sector numbers) in less than two seconds,then provide programmable on-screen views of PNs, Ec/Io (signal clarity),and neighbor-list violations. As a test phone, the Retriever pilot scannerallows test engineers to change over-the-air parameters in the phonewithout disturbing the network. Finally, as a standard, dual-mode digitalwireless handset, it allows field engineers to stay in touch with theirhome offices and other field personnel.
