MIAMI -- September 16, 1998 -- Qualcomm Incorporated (NASDAQ: QCOM), a pioneer and a world leader of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital wireless technology, today announced the opening of a Miami, Fla. office to manage the Company's Latin American sales operations.
"As Qualcomm expands its global presence, we are committed to providing the Latin American market with the most advanced CDMA wireless technology and products," said David J. McDowell, senior vice president of sales for Qualcomm Consumer Products. "Establishing this office will help Qualcomm serve the growing demands of Latin America's highly competitive telecom market."
Qualcomm's CDMA technology has emerged as the fastest growing digital wireless technology in the world and is widely deployed in the region. Today, Qualcomm's innovative phone products are available to consumers in Brazil, Chile, Mexico, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, and Peru. Qualcomm is a leading supplier of CDMA wireless networks for mobile and fixed applications in Latin America, with nationwide deployments underway in Chile and Mexico. Further expansion is expected throughout the region in the coming year.
CDMA technology delivers significant advantages to carriers and consumers, including improved voice quality, enhanced security, fewer dropped calls, and longer talk and standby times. As a result, CDMA's acceptance in the marketplace has grown significantly since the first commercial system was deployed in 1995. Today, more than 60 leading manufacturers worldwide are licensees of Qualcomm's CDMA technology.
"The resources invested in the new Miami office are an indication of the strategic importance of the Latin American region to Qualcomm," said Jim Edson, regional vice president of Latin American operations for Qualcomm's Wireless Infrastructure Division. "We are now even more readily accessible to our customers and look forward to strengthening our relationships with wireless operators throughout the region."
