Qualcomm Incorporated (NASDAQ: QCOM) and Transcommunications Incorporated today announced that Qualcomm's CabCARD® Personal Communications system is now available on multiple platforms. Originally available only on an AS400 platform, the CabCARD Personal Communications system is now available for use on mainframe, LAN, PC-based and other platforms used by OmniTRACS® customers.
"We are excited to have the flexibility of multiple platform capabilities for CabCARD services," said John Sarto, president of Qualcomm's OmniTRACS Division. "All of our OmniTRACS customers can now choose to offer their drivers CabCARD's benefits."
North American Van Lines is one of the first OmniTRACS customers to offer the CabCARD system using a platform other than an AS400 and the first van lines company to make CabCARD available to its drivers. By offering CabCARD to their approximately 2,000 drivers, North American's drivers can now send e-mail directly to their customer with delivery status. This capability can improve customer satisfaction with essentially no added costs.
"CabCARD offered more added value with the same or less costs of a standard phone card," said Greg Johnston, director of administration, Relocation Services Division for North American Van Lines. "We are encouraged by our drivers' excitement about CabCARD and are looking forward to taking advantage of the features now available to us."
Introduced to the transportation industry in October of 1996, CabCARD Personal Communications is a pre-paid service providing discounted long distance phone rates, voice-mail capabilities, and driver e-mail. The only service of this kind in the transportation industry, CabCARD allows Internet e-mail to be sent and received directly from the cab of the truck using the OmniTRACS mobile communications system. Another CabCARD feature is P/E-mail, a pre-programmed e-mail message that can be sent directly to the truck via a touch-tone phone. With this feature, messages can be sent to a driver when a computer or other e-mail device is not accessible.
CabCARD customers to date include Cargo Transporters, Indiana Western Express, USA Trucks, Midwest Specialized Transport, M.S. Carriers, Bo Wevil Transportation, Reichmann Transport, Asche Transfer Inc., Ronnie Dowdy Trucking Service, Landspan Inc., Jim Palmer Trucking, Comcar, US Xpress, KLLM Inc., Celadon Trucking Services, Trism Specialized Carriers, Marten Transport, and Covenant Transport.
