Qualcomm Incorporated (NASDAQ: QCOM) and Transcommunications Incorporated today announced that contracts signed to date for Qualcomm's CabCARD® Personal Communications system represent over 37,000 potential users. C.R. England&Sons, Youngblood Truck Lines Inc.and FTI are among the most recent additions to a rapidly growing list of OmniTRACS® users offering the benefits of CabCARD to their drivers. "The broad acceptance of CabCARD by our customers and their drivers has surpassed our initial estimates," said John Sarto, president of Qualcomm's OmniTRACS Division. "We are pleased that we and Transcomm are able to improve a driver's work environment by bringing them a little closer to home."
Introduced to the transportation industry in October 1996, CabCARD Personal Communications is a pre-paid service providing discounted long distance phone rates, voice-mail capabilities, and driver e-mail. The only service of this kind in the transportation industry, CabCARD allows Internet e-mail to be sent and received directly from the cab of the truck using the OmniTRACS mobile communications system. Another CabCARD feature is P/E-mail, a pre-programmed e-mail message that can be sent directly to the truck via a touch-tone phone. With this feature, messages can be sent to a driver when a computer or other e-mail device is not accessible.
With driver turnover a concern for the trucking industry, offering CabCARD to their drivers provides companies a significant advantage over their competitors in recruiting drivers. "Without a doubt this will help with the recruitment and retention of experienced, qualified drivers," said Mike Skousen, executive administrator of C.R. England. "In fact, driver demand was a key factor in our decision to purchase CabCARD."
"We have had prospective drivers inquire as to whether or not we offered CabCARD before they would consider applying for driving positions at our company," said Bob Martin, director of operations of Youngblood Truck Lines. "CabCARD's benefits help reduce feelings of isolation between our drivers and their families."
Another benefit to the companies that offer CabCARD to their drivers is a reduction in personnel costs. "Driver turnover is one of the costliest factors affecting our operations," said Scott Frederick, vice president management information systems of FTI. "By offering CabCARD, we improve driver retention, and that has a direct impact on our bottom line."
CabCARD customers to date include Cargo Transporters, Indiana Western Express, Midwest Specialized Transport, M.S.
