On Sunday, September 14, the San DiegoChargers take on the Carolina Panthers in the first National Football League (NFL) game to be played at newly renovated Qualcomm Stadium. The game also marks the kickoff of the Stadium's 30th anniversary season.

Harvey P. White, president of Qualcomm Incorporated, will flip the official coin in the ceremonial coin toss prior to the start of the game. Qualcomm will also be giving away more than 70,000 Chargers hats to fans attending the game.

"The Chargers' first game at Qualcomm Stadium is an opportunity for San Diegans to celebrate the beginning of a fantastic home season and experience a newly renovated sports facility," White said. "San Diegans are excited to show their support and look forward to seeing their Chargers playing here in January in one of the world's most successful events in the history of professional sports."

During renovations for the Stadium last February, a dispute over financing of the remodeling threatened to move Super Bowl XXXII and the Chargers during the 1997 season. Qualcomm's involvement in acquiring the naming rights to the venerable facility for $18 million over 20 years not only completed renovations, but also put its brand name in front of a global television audience.

Stadium renovations include an increase in capacity of approximately 10,000 seats, 31 additional skyboxes, a new video scoreboard, improved sightlines, upgraded Loge and Club Level sections, improved disabled access and additional restrooms.
