SAN DIEGO - August 15, 1996 - Qualcomm Incorporated (NASDAQ: QCOM) todayannounced that it has signed a multi-million dollar, royalty-bearinglicense agreement with VLSI Technology of San Jose, Calif. The agreementenables VLSI to develop, manufacture and sell CDMA (IS-95) ApplicationSpecific Integrated Circuits (ASICs) to Qualcomm's subscriber equipmentlicensees for digital cellular, personal communications services (PCS) andwireless local loop applications around the globe.
"VLSI enjoys a worldwide reputation as a key supplier of digitalcommunications integrated circuits to the mobile communicationsmarketplace," said Steve Altman, senior vice president and general managerof Qualcomm's Technology Transfer division . "By adding CDMA to itsportfolio of capabilities, VLSI stands to gain an even larger share of thislucrative market."
With this agreement, VLSI Technology becomes the third ASIC supplier toworldwide CDMA markets, joining Qualcomm and DSP Communications. CDMA isthe digital technology of choice for digital cellular and PCS in the UnitedStates. The majority of wireless carriers here have committed to CDMA, andhave already begun deploying networks across the nation. The technology isalso being adopted for wireless local loop applications, which offereconomical alternatives to basic wired telephone service. CDMA offersbetter voice quality with longer talk and standby times and greaterwireless access to millions of subscribers.
