U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s GIPC publishes a case study about Qualcomm

"Creating Foundational 5G Technology: A Case Study of Qualcomm" examines Qualcomm’s role in making key discoveries and introducing the inventions that form the basis of 5G.

We are pleased to announce that the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Global Innovation Policy Center (GIPC) recently published “Creating Foundational 5G Technology: A Case Study of Qualcomm”. Featured as part of GIPC’s Value Ingenuity project, the case study describes Qualcomm’s role in making scientific discoveries, introducing key inventions, and leading the creation of the foundational technologies on which the 5G global commercial ecosystem is built.

GIPC’s Value Ingenuity project aims to promote a shared purpose of sustainable innovation and investment in R&D around the world, while highlighting stories of disruptive technologies, its roots, and its socio-political impact.

Creating Foundational 5G Technology: A Case Study of Qualcomm explains Qualcomm’s challenges and its unique position as the pioneer of 1G to 4G technologies, to be the only company in the United States positioned to drive the early stage design and development of 5G.

The case study provides insights into the decision making around Qualcomm’s strategic investments in 5G, the enormous risks and costs going from early-stage R&D to commercialization, and the importance of the wireless technology standards body to global interoperability — in order to secure America’s leadership in 5G.

GIPC emphasizes “….the wireless industry will continue to build on the efforts of this remarkable American company and the strength of its intellectual property, bringing extraordinary benefits to consumers and enterprises around the world”.

While recognizing Qualcomm’s history, the case study also recognizes the company’s role in a world impacted by Covid-19. The impact of Covid-19 on our society and the global economy in 2020 has spurred a renewed interest and urgency in the rollout of 5G networks. Governments, industry, enterprises, agriculture, food services, consumer products, and manufacturers are experiencing a surge in demand for bandwidth to satisfy the growing demand for remote connectivity and collaboration.

5G brings the promise of remote connectivity, renewed resilience, information clarity, and digital transformation to the post-Covid world. It is an honor for Qualcomm’s technology leadership to be featured by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and GIPC.
