How can Snapdragon 845 change how you connect with the world?

Cutting-edge advances in cellular, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth boost speed, connectivity, efficiency

What if you could transform the way you access, view, listen, and share your media on your personal devices by tapping into a 5G-like performance? From cloud computing to downloading HD video to interactive gaming, you want virtually instant access to your content, even if your network is congested. At the heart of these mobile experiences lies connectivity, and Qualcomm Technologies has engineered state-of-the-art advances in cellular, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth to give you the speed you need for both work and play.

Snapdragon X20 LTE modem: Delivering unparalleled cellular speed

Snapdragon 845 integrates the Snapdragon X20 LTE modem, the world’s first-announced modem to support Category 18 download speeds. It is 20 percent faster than our previous generation advanced modem, delivering a market-leading 1.2 Gbps. It’s about delivering the performance of fiber without the cables. X20 is yet another step on our path to 5G, enabling you to enjoy new experiences on your mobile device with blistering speed.

Mobile operators can use the speed and spectral efficiency of Snapdragon X20, which supports up to 5 times carrier aggregation, up to 4x4 MIMO on three aggregated carriers, support for LAA, and up to 12 LTE spatial streams. This expanded flexibility allows for 90 percent of the world’s operators to upgrade to Gigabit LTE. Momentum continues to build: More than 44 operators in 26 countries have launched or are about to launch Gigabit LTE networks, and more are on the way.

11ac Wi-Fi: Improving your connection in crowded places

Snapdragon 845 integrates 2x2 11ac Wi-Fi allowing customers to take advantage of broadly deployed network capabilities while improving your device’s connection within crowded carrier networks (e.g. public hotspots), delivering higher reliability, faster roaming, and a 16-times faster Wi-Fi connection setup (versus our previous generation), which adds 30 percent more effective capacity. What does this mean for you? An increase of 30 percent in effective capacity as a starting point. Also, because 11ac provides concurrent multi-device support via 2x2 MU-MIMO technology, you’ll experience virtually no dead spots in your homes, or as you stroll through crowded spots like airports and shopping malls. So, instead of looking for good spots to get better throughput, every location is a good spot, even on a crowded network.

The secret sauce behind this blazing speed includes three key ingredients. First, carrier-grade Wi-Fi uses Wi-Fi standards 802.11 r, v, k, and other optimizations to reduce your connection setup by up to 85 percent. Second, it includes band steering to avoid congested channels. Lastly, it optimizes protocols to avoid re-authenticating your device as you move between Wi-Fi access points.

2x2 11ac also reduces your download times and increases your web browsing speed. Hundreds of devices from leading manufacturers around the world are currently integrating this technology.

11ad Wi-Fi: Creating high speed zones in smaller spaces

Snapdragon 845’s 802.11ad uses the mmWave spectrum in the new and congestion-free 60 GHz band, giving users a sneak peek at 5G mobile experiences today. mmWave is being considered by regulatory and standards organizations as the means to usher in 5G with significant low-latency bandwidth to provide high-speed HD video, gaming and various other forms of high-quality multimedia content. 11ad adds a third frequency band to overcome congestion in the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands to help you enjoy ultra-fast 4.6Gbps data rates without interfering with existing wireless devices.

Why is this so exciting? Because of its low latency and ultra-fast speed, 11ad ushers in a whole new class of applications. Here’s a snapshot of what you can expect.

And it doesn’t end there. 11ad also enables you to be a gigabit hotspot for your friends and family. Additionally, you can perform quick content transfer to users. You’ll also get speedy access to the cloud, enjoy turbo-charged gaming, and surf the web with lightning-fast browsing. The applications are nearly limitless.

While 802.11ac is the mainstream Wi-Fi standard designed to cover your home, business, and various hotspots around your community, 11ad complements 11ac, providing cost-effective, low-power and very high-speed connectivity within a single room or open area. Our tri-band wireless LAN solutions bridge your 11ad and 11ac services, enabling you to seamlessly switch between the two to ensure the best experiences.

Snapdragon 845 is the first to integrate a diversity 11ad antenna module to deliver robust coverage and throughput while overcoming issues like hand-blocking. This is achieved by utilizing a state-of-the-art radio module that includes a phased array of up to 24 antennas which create the high gain, dynamically-adjusting beams required for multigigabit transmissions.

Qualcomm TrueWireless: Enhancing your Bluetooth experiences

We’re excited to share Qualcomm TrueWireless with our fellow audiophiles. This is an advanced Bluetooth 5.1 system that features proprietary enhancements and some truly revolutionary innovations. Qualcomm TrueWireless will change the way your Bluetooth plays your music over your wireless speakers as well as how you listen to tunes in your earbuds or headphones.

Snapdragon 845’s Bluetooth system enables you to broadcast music or live audio to multiple devices, such as wireless speakers, simultaneously. Best of all, it lets you do so directly without an extra accessory like a hub or a gateway. And there are many applications beyond speakers as the TrueWireless technology can network your phone to other Bluetooth-equipped phones. For example, this could allow a museum tour guide to use her smartphone and broadcast her voice privately to the tour group with Bluetooth-equipped headphones, without disturbing other museum patrons.

Wireless earbuds

With today’s legacy technology, sound is transmitted to one earbud that acts as both as a receiver and relay that then shares the audio signal with the other earbud. With TrueWireless, a Snapdragon 845-powered device can broadcast a Bluetooth audio signal stream to both wireless earbuds separately. This simultaneous transmission reduces the power consumption of your wireless earbuds and makes them up to 75 percent more battery efficient.
