Snapdragon X20 LTE modem: Delivering unparalleled cellular speed

Snapdragon 845 integrates the Snapdragon X20 LTE modem, the world’s first-announced modem to support Category 18 download speeds. It is 20 percent faster than our previous generation advanced modem, delivering a market-leading 1.2 Gbps. It’s about delivering the performance of fiber without the cables. X20 is yet another step on our path to 5G, enabling you to enjoy new experiences on your mobile device with blistering speed.

Mobile operators can use the speed and spectral efficiency of Snapdragon X20, which supports up to 5 times carrier aggregation, up to 4x4 MIMO on three aggregated carriers, support for LAA, and up to 12 LTE spatial streams. This expanded flexibility allows for 90 percent of the world’s operators to upgrade to Gigabit LTE. Momentum continues to build: More than 44 operators in 26 countries have launched or are about to launch Gigabit LTE networks, and more are on the way.

11ac Wi-Fi: Improving your connection in crowded places

Snapdragon 845 integrates 2x2 11ac Wi-Fi allowing customers to take advantage of broadly deployed network capabilities while improving your device’s connection within crowded carrier networks (e.g. public hotspots), delivering higher reliability, faster roaming, and a 16-times faster Wi-Fi connection setup (versus our previous generation), which adds 30 percent more effective capacity. What does this mean for you? An increase of 30 percent in effective capacity as a starting point. Also, because 11ac provides concurrent multi-device support via 2x2 MU-MIMO technology, you’ll experience virtually no dead spots in your homes, or as you stroll through crowded spots like airports and shopping malls. So, instead of looking for good spots to get better throughput, every location is a good spot, even on a crowded network.

The secret sauce behind this blazing speed includes three key ingredients. First, carrier-grade Wi-Fi uses Wi-Fi standards 802.11 r, v, k, and other optimizations to reduce your connection setup by up to 85 percent. Second, it includes band steering to avoid congested channels. Lastly, it optimizes protocols to avoid re-authenticating your device as you move between Wi-Fi access points.

2x2 11ac also reduces your download times and increases your web browsing speed. Hundreds of devices from leading manufacturers around the world are currently integrating this technology.

11ad Wi-Fi: Creating high speed zones in smaller spaces

Snapdragon 845’s 802.11ad uses the mmWave spectrum in the new and congestion-free 60 GHz band, giving users a sneak peek at 5G mobile experiences today. mmWave is being considered by regulatory and standards organizations as the means to usher in 5G with significant low-latency bandwidth to provide high-speed HD video, gaming and various other forms of high-quality multimedia content. 11ad adds a third frequency band to overcome congestion in the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands to help you enjoy ultra-fast 4.6Gbps data rates without interfering with existing wireless devices.

Snapdragon 845 is the first to integrate a diversity 11ad antenna module to deliver robust coverage and throughput while overcoming issues like hand-blocking.
