Designed to deliver precise data on shoppers’ indoor locations within a 5- to 10-centimeter accuracy.

Back in 2016, we introduced Qualcomm Lumicast, a revolutionary indoor positioning technology that’s switching things up in the lighting industry. We also announced that we would begin working with manufacturers, like Acuity Brands, and GE to commercially support and deploy LED lighting fixtures and services that incorporate Lumicast. Now, almost a year later, we’re seeing significant traction, as Lumicast is expected to roll out in hundreds of retail store locations around North America in the coming months.

Qualcomm Lumicast is designed to provide precise location information with centimeter-level accuracy (5- to 10-centimeter) and highly accurate device orientation. This location information can be used indoors in a variety of ways to improve operational efficiencies and to enhance customers shopping experience. Some examples include understanding the traffic patterns of shoppers and identifying hotspots within the store, automated continuous monitoring of inventory on the shelves, navigating indoors or providing information about products, as well as offering relevant coupons to customers, and more.

Visible light signals are transmitted from LED fixtures and decoded by shoppers’ smartphones via the phone’s camera and further augmented through use of sensors and Bluetooth technologies. As a result, manufacturers can deliver coupons based on shopper’s interests, help people easily find products in stores, and create shopping lists.

As for retailer benefits, Lumicast is engineered to help capture analytics on the customers themselves, provide fast and reliable customer support, and understand consumer behavior patterns. This can lead to higher sales, increased customer loyalty, and more in-depth insights into the customer shopping experience.

At the forefront of adoption for Lumicast is Acuity Brands, one of the world’s leading providers of indoor and outdoor lighting and energy management solutions. As a purveyor of products that extend from individual devices to intelligent network systems, Acuity works to help retailers save energy and maintenance costs, make better operational decisions, and deliver high quality indoor location services.

At this year’s Shoptalk conference, Acuity Brands will demonstrate new indoor location use cases based on Qualcomm Lumicast. This product will promote workplace efficiency, notifying employees to attend to busier areas of the store, and sending alerts when an asset enters a restricted area.

To experience the technology for yourself, visit the Acuity Brands’ booth 1117 from March 19 to 22.
