On Tuesday, September 27th, Xiaomi unveiled their new flagship smartphones – the Xiaomi Mi 5s and Xiaomi Mi 5s Plus. Both devices are powered by our recently announced premium-tier Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 processor and deliver two “world’s firsts:”
Xiaomi’s Mi 5s is the first commercial smartphone with a biometric fingerprint sensor under 400 µm (microns) of glass. This is possible because the Mi 5s uses ultrasonic-based Snapdragon Sense ID fingerprint technology. Ultrasonic waves pass through the cover glass, supporting a sleeker device design; there is no need to cut a separate hole in the cover glass, as with capacitive-based alternatives.
With the Mi 5s quick, reliable device access is possible thanks to the low latency and consistent matching of Snapdragon Sense ID fingerprint technology.
Your data and privacy is protected by the hardware-based Qualcomm SecureMSM foundation and security-focused on-device design inside of the Snapdragon 821 processor. This offers greater security compared to alternative biometric fingerprint solutions, not to mention passwords and PIN codes. The underlying FIDO UAF protocol assists security-rich online authentication without the need to transfer fingerprint data, thereby keeping the fingerprint data securely on the device.
The Xiaomi Mi 5s Plus is the first commercial device with a Qualcomm Clear Sight camera. This innovative dual-camera technology is designed to produce photos with improved dynamic range, increased level of detail, and less noise in low light.
Qualcomm Clear Sight features two cameras, each with its own lens and image sensor. Like your eyes, the lenses have identical focal length (meaning they see the same distance). But each camera has a different image sensor: one color image sensor (to mimic cones), and a separate black and white image sensor (which can absorb more light, to mimic rods). The black and white camera provides more level of detail and less noise, and the Clear Sight fusion algorithm takes advantage of this to enhance the resolution and decrease noise in the final image.
The Snapdragon 821 processor features a technology core dedicated to cameras—a dual image signal processor (ISP), which we call Qualcomm Spectra. The Qualcomm Spectra ISPs in the Snapdragon 821 processor are engineered to merge and quickly processes data simultaneously from both cameras to create a high quality photograph, even in very low lighting, by using algorithms to intelligently blend the images captured from each of the two cameras.

- Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0: Now you can spend even less time charging, and can grab and go more quickly. We started with Qualcomm Quick Charge 1.0, which was engineered to charge up to 40% faster than conventional charging. Quick Charge 3.0 is designed to charge twice as fast as Quick Charge 1.0 and to be 38 percent more efficient than Quick Charge 2.0.
- Snapdragon X12 LTE: Browse the web and share photos with friends in nearly an instant. The Snapdragon X12 LTE modem supports peak download speeds up to 600 Mbps and peak upload speeds up to 150 Mbps, thanks to support for several LTE Advanced technologies, including carrier aggregation.
- Qualcomm Aqstic: Incredible Hi-Fi audio. Both Xiaomi phones have the Qualcomm Aqstic audio codec built in. It has an integrated DAC (Digital-to-Analog Converter) that supports up to 192-kHz/24-bit lossless audio playback. This is a high-resolution standard that recording studios use to master tracks. The Qualcomm Aqstic speaker amplifier on the Xiaomi Mi 5s Plus is desgined to bring you clear highs and deep-lows from your external speakers at high volume. It also features speaker protection so you can enjoy your music at full blast without worrying about your speakers.
