Fragmentation is the enemy of the Internet of Things

The title of this piece says it all. No one reasonably disagrees with this idea. To gain the benefits that IoT promises, there must be a single, open, secure and interoperable framework that all IoT products and services can stand upon.

Qualcomm deeply believes in this vision, and it was the premise behind the launch of the AllJoyn open source software framework in early 2011 by Qualcomm Innovation Center, Inc.

It was this same vision of seamless interoperability—“things just work”—that also led Qualcomm, through its wholly owned subsidiary Qualcomm Connected Experiences, Inc. (QCE), to be a driving force behind the creation of the AllSeen Alliance in 2013 and the contribution of the AllJoyn codebase thereafter.

This has been our vision from the beginning, and why Qualcomm, along with other IoT industry leaders and the members of the Open Interconnect Consortium, announced today that they are working together to form the Open Connectivity Foundation (OCF). 

We believe that fragmentation is the enemy of IoT. That’s why we are working with these like-minded companies to invest in the future of IoT. Our goal is to continue to combat fragmentation and make our shared vision a reality, to benefit those who will use IoT products and services—consumers in their homes and cars, enterprises in their offices, industry on the factory floor, and municipalities seeking to create smart cities that better serve their citizens.

Qualcomm remains a member of the AllSeen Alliance, and in that capacity we will work with both organizations to help establish a single open standard for IoT. And when this happens, those of us who believe in an open, robust IoT standard for connectivity and interaction among products and services, will have gone beyond saying we believe in it—we will have accomplished it. 

Every company working towards this open standard needs to serve its individual customers and pursue its own product strategies at the individual company level – this is no different for Qualcomm. We are committed to enabling our customers to design products for a variety of emerging ecosystems. Our platforms are designed to support the leading OSes, software frameworks and cloud services.

These are exciting times, and we encourage all those working on IoT to join us in our effort to achieve the interoperability vision we all share.

The Internet of Everything is based on the idea that devices, objects and systems can be connected in simple, transparent ways to enable seamless sharing of information and coordinated and intelligent operations across all of them. As no single company can accomplish the level of interoperability required to support the Internet of Everything and address everyday, real-life scenarios, a united, pan-industry effort is needed to deliver new experiences to consumers and businesses.
