There are devices, and then there are devices. Today, HTC announced the latest in the latter category: the HTC One A9. Combining powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon technology with HTC’s storied attention to detail and precision, the One A9 provides users with an immersive, powerful experience across all elements of the modern smartphone, and is the first non-Nexus smartphone to feature the most up-to-date, fastest Android OS.
From the company that created the first Windows smartphone, the first 4G smartphone, and the first all-metal smartphone comes another first: HTC’s One A9 is the first non-Nexus smartphone to run Android 6.0 Marshmallow, combining the technology of the One A9 with the features of Google. And featuring the powerful 64-bit capable Snapdragon 617 processor with X8 LTE, the smartphone is designed to let its users indulge in cutting-edge imaging and audio, connectivity, power, and gaming.
First, the One A9 is equipped to handle the highest audio and video demands. There’s really no point to watching streaming video in 1080p if your device can’t keep up with processing it; who wants to watch a live concert where the lead guitarist looks like an 8-bit video game character? Luckily, the Snapdragon 617 supports X8 LTE connectivity, as well as Qualcomm VIVE 802.11ac.
And while consistent consumption of multimedia can be taxing on battery life, the Snapdragon 617 is engineered for maximum battery efficiency: the HTC One A9 allows viewing up to 12 hours of HD video on one charge. Even if your battery is low, the One A9 supports Qualcomm Quick Charge 2.0 fast charging technology, designed to charge the phone up to 75 percent faster than conventional chargers, ensuring that you’re up and running and not tethered to an outlet. And support for the next generation Quick Charge 3.0 is expected in the coming months.
The phone also boasts superior audio. The Snapdragon 617 supports 24-bit high-fidelity audio and DTS Headphone X, designed to deliver 5.1 surround sound over any pair of headphones. So not only can you watch that band rock out with expert visual clarity, you can also hear it in stunning surround sound. If the phone had a “spawn a spontaneous crowd” feature, it would be just like seeing it live.
But the HTC One A9 is not only about consuming—it’s also about producing. When the moment strikes, the phone’s 13-megapixel rear camera is geared to capture it. With optical image stabilization and the ability to save photos as RAW files, you can channel your inner professional photographer simply by reaching down into your pocket or handbag. The connectivity supported by the Snapdragon 617 ensures that anyone can enjoy the events and things you want to share with them in stunning quality.
The One A9’s powerful technology base features Android 6.0 Marshmallow, allowing for seamless integration with new, powerful applications. A multi-directional fingerprint scanner combined with Android Pay reduces picking up a few items at the corner store down to “tap, pay, done.” And with Google’s Now on Tap feature, One A9 users can explore contextual information about whatever is on screen: movie reviews from a text, songs mentioned in a blog post, and reservation-making from an e-mail.
All of this comes housed in a sleek metal design. With rich, striking colors and unique finishes, available with dual finishes in carbon gray, opal silver, topaz gold, and deep garnet (dependent on region), the HTC One A9 is a nod to classic design while providing the next evolution in the modern smartphone. HTC’s attention to details come through in the elegant curves and refined edges that make the super-thin metal frame feel light but powerful for everyday use.
HTC announced they will be making a special SIM-unlocked edition available on at the HTC website, available for pre-order today, along with 6 months of unlimited music on Google Play Music and their UH OH Protection plan. It is expected to be available worldwide, beginning in November.
