ZTE introduces Tencent OS Axon Watch

Consumer Electronic giant ZTE recently announced the Axon Watch, its first smartwatch, currently available only for consumers in China. The first smartwatch to run on the new Tencent TOS+ operating system, the Axon Watch is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor and includes 512MB of RAM and 4GB of storage.

The Snapdragon 400 already runs inside some of the most high-profile wearables out there, including the latest Moto 360, both the Asus Zenwatch and Zenwatch 2, and Huawei Watch running on Android Wear, the LG Watch Urbane LTE on LG Wearable OS, and the Samsung Gear S and Gear S2 3G with Tizen OS.

Snapdragon processors are engineered to support myriad design and connectivity options on a variety of operating systems; TOS+ is one more to add to the list, specifically for customers in China. The mobile OS will power a variety of smart devices—not just smartwatches—and includes Tencent’s TenPay native mobile-payment system. The new OS is free for manufacturers and developers to use, as long as they agree to share their revenue with Tencent. It will definitely open new options for smart devices in China where some popular operating systems, including Android Wear, are not yet fully available.

The Axon Watch features a stand-out design, with a sleek, thin bezel. Wearers will be able to monitor a health and fitness data, get notifications of incoming phone calls, and send and receive messages. Tencent also created the popular chat service WeChat, so it’s not surprising to find that app on the Axon. It’s controlled by voice commands, and also by touch on its circular 1.4-inch sapphire-coated Gorilla Glass touch screen. And with an IP67 certification, the Axon Watch is protected from water immersion between 15 centimeters and 1 meter.

Snapdragon processors are also featured in ZTE devices including the Axon Pro smartphone and SPro 2 mobile projector.
