As mobile users around the world are becoming increasingly sophisticated, their tolerance for inconvenient methods of mobile authentication, like passwords and PIN codes, is decreasing. So mobile carriers and OEMs are likewise looking to make mobile authentication more convenient and more secure for their savvy customers. DOCOMO, Japan’s predominant mobile phone operator, made an industry-leading leap forward with their announcement this week of their new authentication and mobile payment service based on Qualcomm Technologies’ mobile biometric platform, called the Qualcomm Snapdragon Sense ID biometric platform.

We wanted to be sure you heard our recent announcement about it and understand that the name Sense ID refers to more than the 3D fingerprint technology we announced earlier this year.

DOCOMO is the first operator to adopt and implement the Snapdragon Sense ID biometrics platform. The platform, which is currently supported within the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor, is being used alongside third-party biometric sensors for DOCOMO’s mobile biometric authentication and payment service that started this week in Japan.

The DOCOMO service will help provide DOCOMO customers with enhanced security, as well as ease of authentication when making mobile payments and when accessing DOCOMO’s content and services. The unique advantages and benefits of the Snapdragon Sense ID biometrics platform have led DOCOMO to deploy this service across their entire network:

  • Ease of authentication: helps address the inherent limitations of passwords and pin codes
  • Enhanced security: Qualcomm Technologies’ FIDO implementation is based on Qualcomm SecureMSM technology
  • Ease of implementation: contributes to lower development cost for OEMs
  • Versatility: new types of biometric sensors, like iris scanning, can be used
  • Adaptability: able to grow as mobile biometrics needs grow
  • Reliability: carriers like DOCOMO can confidently base their services on Qualcomm Technologies’ platform

DOCOMO customers using devices with this feature enabled can now unlock their phones without having to key in a PIN code and can make mobile payments with a quick glance. They can benefit from the technology’s ease of use and from reduced reliance on passwords and PIN numbers. They can also benefit from improved security and privacy, and from the ability to easily interface with DOCOMO services and with existing and future FIDO-enabled devices and services.

We at Qualcomm Technologies are proud to provide DOCOMO with the platform that offers the advantages necessary for DOCOMO to base their service on our platform - and to use new forms of biometric sensors with our platform, including iris scanning.

The Snapdragon Sense ID biometrics platform consists of Qualcomm Technologies’ secure authentication framework and certified implementation of the FIDO (Fast IDentity Online) Alliance Universal Authentication Framework (UAF) protocol. The authentication framework provides secure processing and storage of biometric data, whereas our UAF implementation provides secure authentication and connection among FIDO-enabled devices and services.

The platform is truly versatile, providing the foundation for not only DOCOMO’s new service, but also our end-to-end Qualcomm Snapdragon Sense ID 3D fingerprint solution, which also includes our own unique Qualcomm biometric integrated circuit (QBIC) and custom 3D ultrasonic fingerprint sensor technology and algorithms. The Snapdragon Sense ID name refers to all Snapdragon biometric capabilities, which to date include the biometric platform and the 3D fingerprint technology.

Qualcomm Snapdragon, Qualcomm Snapdragon Sense ID, and Qualcomm SecureMSM are products of Qualcomm Technologies, Inc.
