Qualcomm concept car - Maserati demonstrates next-gen safety and infotainment

In-vehicle technology has come a long way since the days of simple speedometers and AM radios, and this year at the Consumer Electronics Show, Qualcomm® Technologies and QNX® are showcasing the future of automotive technologies. Together, the two companies have reimagined the entire display system of a 2015 Maserati Quattroporte technology concept car to demonstrate the next generation of connected infotainment and safety features.

A suite of Qualcomm technologies—including a Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 602A automotive processor with power-management integrated circuitry, Qualcomm® Gobi™ 3G/4G LTE modem, Qualcomm® VIVE™ Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, Qualcomm® IZat™ location services, and Qualcomm® WiPower™ wireless charging—are designed to work together to fuel an advanced system of connected infotainment and driver-assistance features, all customized for the concept car.

A digital instrument cluster feeds the driver information from all the car’s systems at a glance. Running on the QNX car platform and QNX OS, a leading automotive software currently deployed on millions of production vehicles, the readout is configurable by the driver and updatable in real time. In addition to browsing media and radio presets, drivers will also see an 8-inch image from the rear-view parking assist camera or readouts from a system that uses map data to let the driver see and prepare for roads and curves beyond the horizon.

At the same time, a network of sensors work together to boost driver safety. LIDAR (light detection and ranging) provides forward-facing collision warning up to 50 meters ahead. A set of ultrasonic and optical sensors near each side mirror spot pedestrians, cyclists, and obstacles in the blind spots, helping the driver make safer lane changes and turns. Meanwhile, the rear-view camera, supplemented by ultrasonic proximity sensors, provides an unobstructed view of what’s coming up from behind. To allow the driver to stay focused on the road, a strip of LEDs on the windshield provide head-up warnings of obstacles.

The primary 12-inch infotainment display supports voice, touch, and simple gesture inputs designed to minimize distraction. By default, the screen displays map info, controls, music playback, and phone calls. While a “now playing” section remains anchored at the bottom of the screen, the upper portion can dynamically split into two halves, allowing the driver to select destinations and media without taking over the entire display. The system can pair with smart devices, but also has built-in apps, including streaming radio applications. Integrated LTE is designed to allow users to enjoy their popular audio and video streaming applications and also serves as a Wi-Fi hotspot for brought-in devices. Qualcomm also continues to work with industry leaders and the latest standards to deliver superior projection mode technology to project phone displays over USB to the head unit.

The car also features a WiPower wireless charging surface. Allowing for more flexibility by eliminating the need to fumble with wires and connections, this surface is designed to allow devices that meet the Alliance for Wireless Power’s Rezence™ specification—like smartphones and Bluetooth headsets—to charge wirelessly.
