All multimode modems are not created equal

4G LTE is growing fast, and 3G and 2G are widely pervasive. So what does this mean for a mobile user who wants to be always connected? It looks really simple - all you need is a mobile device with a multimode modem that supports 3 cellular generations of technology, a.k.a. modes, and you’re good to go.

But it isn’t always as simple as it looks, because all multimode modems aren’t created equal. The diversity of modes under each generation of technology – TDD/FDD for 4G LTE, HSPA+/1x/EV-DO/TD-SCDMA for 3G and GSM/EDGE for 2G – and the associated handoffs possible across different modes for voice and data make multimode modems an extremely complex piece of technology.
