Last week Amazon announced their new Amazon Fire HDX 8.9 tablet.

Specially built for work and play, the Fire HDX tablet is the first commercially available tablet powered by the advanced Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 805 processor. Available with Wi-Fi, or add integrated 4G LTE through carriers Verizon Wireless or AT&T so productivity and multi-player gaming don’t have to stop while travelling. The Snapdragon 805 features the Adreno™ 420 GPU, designed to enable beyond-HD visuals for more realistic video streaming and console-quality graphics even with online 3D games. Pair that with a vivid 8.9-inch HDX display with over 4 million pixels, 339ppi, and get ready for a singularly lifelike multimedia experience.

Of course, going beyond HD is much more than just the display or what appears on it. With the help of the dual ISP inside the Snapdragon 805, the Amazon Fire HDX can take amazingly sharp, high-resolution photos with advanced post-processing features for ghost-free HDR images, so that pictures stay true to life and without digital distortions, even in less than ideal lighting.

Connect the Fire HDX to a compatible HDTV through VGA, HDMI or even wirelessly with Miracast, so that entertainment on the go can keep on going even once the journey ends. With Dolby Atmos virtual surround sound capability, supported by the Snapdragon advanced integrated audio codec, users can expect multidimensional audio for the most advanced media experience while wearing headphones. That’s true surround, not just from around the listener, but from above as well and through any headphones. Dialogue will be crisper, and normally abrasive sounds like heavy explosions or loud background effects won’t be drowning out the hero’s catchphrase anymore.

All of that is bound to come in handy with access to Amazon Instant Video or Prime Instant Video. It is Amazon, after all, so Fire HDX users can expect premium access to movies and entertainment content that wouldn’t be available on just any tablet. Prime Instant Video features an integrated encryption solution, so users can enjoy access to the best movies and entertainment – even offline. Learn more about how Qualcomm Security Solutions supports this feature.

The Amazon Fire HDX 8.9 tablet is available for pre-order and is expected to begin shipping in October. Prices start at $379 for Wi-Fi and $529 for 4G LTE.

An earlier version of this post misstated the tablet’s ability to play surround sound through its built-in speakers.
