Today, Qualcomm employees around the world will celebrate the 44th annual Earth Day.
Our theme for this year’s celebration is “Replenish the Planet”—a focus on water conservation, given increasing concerns about both our local and global water supply.
Qualcomm’s efforts in the area of water conservation extend beyond our facilities, where we employ various techniques to utilize as much reclaimed water as possible. In 2012, we assessed the long-term water challenges that our primary foundry suppliers for semiconductors may face, as well as potential water challenges within our own operations, and last year we continued to evaluate this.
Moreover, our interest in water extends to our collaborations with others, for example through the EKOCENTER project, which brings clean drinking water and wireless communications to underserved communities around the world. Our business efforts in smart grid have also evolved to include water applications that will affect how utilities routinely collect data and convert it into “actionable” information for decision making.
Today, our campus in Taiwan will be having seminars on food additives and other topics, planting flowers in our fab and holding a water-themed children’s drawing contest; Qualcomm employees in India will participate in an e-waste collection drive, watch internal and external presentations on sustainability topics and have the opportunity to buy eco-friendly products from local NGOs on site.
Employees in our Singapore office will turn their lights off for an hour today to conserve energy, and employees in our Brazil office began using World Cup-themed reusable water bottles to reduce the waste associated with disposable cups.
In North America, our Bay Area offices are holding their own water-themed Earth Day Festival, complete with urban farming demos and EV test drives, and further north our Canadian offices will be having a lunch workshop on organic farming by a local organic farm in honor of today, among other activities.
And here in San Diego, our employees will be participating in an Earth Day Festival featuring the latest electric vehicle models, purchasing reduced-price LED light bulbs, tasting fresh fruits and vegetables from the farm stand, learning more about our smart cities efforts and checking out amazing vertical wall garden options. We will also be showing the movie Watershed and providing opportunities to learn about different water conservation projects that can be implemented at home.

We are holding these events to inspire environmental awareness—and to highlight some of the ways Qualcomm is contributing to a more sustainable future.
As you may know, our three-month Spotlight on Sustainability campaign to increase our employees’ awareness about all the opportunities for them to get involved in sustainability kicked off a few weeks ago.
Our Earth Day activities are just some of the many ways we’re spotlighting sustainability. Next month, through QCares Experience, our employees will have opportunities to work with nonprofits on environmental conservation projects, along with projects to feed and clothe the homeless, care for animals, build homes, and much more.
But here at Qualcomm, caring about the environment isn’t something we only do one day or three months out of the year—it’s something we do every day. So whether it’s today or tomorrow, next week or next month, we encourage you to take some time out of your day to replenish the planet.
