It’s National Volunteer Week in the U.S., and Qualcomm is getting into the spirit!
National Volunteer Week (NVW) “is about inspiring, recognizing and encouraging people to seek out imaginative ways to engage in their communities.” Established in 1974 by Points of Light, this year marks the 40th anniversary of NVW.
In his National Volunteer Week Presidential Proclamation, President Obama called on all Americans “to make service a part of their daily lives,” noting that volunteerism is a shared responsibility that makes our country “a better and a stronger force for good.”
We’re celebrating NVW by opening registration for May’s QCares Experience, our annual companywide global month of volunteerism. While our employees are normally encouraged to be involved in the local community throughout the year—whether it’s through leadership positions at various nonprofit organizations and by donating time to local organizations—the QCares Experience is unique in that it brings Qualcommers together for a companywide, paid-time-off volunteer effort in the month of May. They work with children, help the homeless, protect the environment, clean up local beaches, pack meals at food banks and do much more.
In 2013, more than 2,100 employees participated in 110 projects in 32 locations across the globe. Our hope is that these volunteer projects not only help the organizations for one day, but translate into an even bigger impact—by inspiring our employees to get more deeply engaged in volunteer service in their personal time and feel more connected to their colleagues, our Company and the community.
We support and enhance employees’ personal involvement at nonprofits through various grants. Our Charitable Match Program offers matching of employees’ personal donations and volunteer time to organizations. In addition, employees can request grants in honor of their nonprofit board service or their Qualcomm team participation in charitable athletic events. Through our various charitable endeavors, Qualcomm has donated more than $240 million overall to benefit nonprofit organizations since 2000.
Earlier this month we launched Qualcomm’s Spotlight on Sustainability, a new initiative to educate and excite employees about sustainability and encourage them to get more active in sustainability efforts. The QCares Experience next month is just one of many ways we’re getting employees excited and engaged.
Stay tuned for upcoming sustainability-focused blog posts throughout our Spotlight campaign, and in the meantime, we encourage you to celebrate National Volunteer Week by getting active in your local community.
