Happy World Water Day! You probably already know that Qualcomm is appreciative of water, but you may not be aware that World Water Day is an international celebration that focuses attention on the importance of water and advocates for the sustainable management of our resources.
This event came about as the result of a recommendation from the 1992 UN Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro, after which the UN General Assembly designated March 22, 1993 as the first World Water Day—making today the 22nd anniversary. Every year, the celebration highlights a different aspect of water conservation.
This year’s theme is the nexus between water and energy, which is particularly relevant in California, where (as in other locales) there is water in energy and energy in water. The theme is also coordinated with the launch of the 2014 edition of the UN World Water Development Report titled “Water and Energy,” which provides a detailed analysis of the interl inkages between the two resources in the context of sustainable development.
In fact, according to the report, an estimated 90 percent of global power generation is water-intensive today.
Here at Qualcomm, we’ve demonstrated our awareness of the relationship between both saving water and energy. In our San Diego facilities, we make our greatest gains in water conservation by utilizing reclaimed water instead of potable water for irrigation and air conditioning. Additionally, at those of our facilities in San Diego where we do not have access to reclaimed water for our cooling towers, we avoid consuming another 11.5 million gallons of potable water annually by carefully managing the treatment of the water, enabling us to use it longer before having to flush the system and refill it.
Next month, Qualcomm will be kicking off our “Spotlight on Sustainability” initiative, which we hope will educate and excite our employees about the myriad opportunities to get involved with sustainability efforts at the Company, both here at our headquarters as well as at our offices worldwide. One of these opportunities will be our “Replenish the Planet” Earth Day celebrations here in San Diego and in our Santa Clara and San Jose offices on April 22, which will focus on local and global water conservation. We’ll also be celebrating Earth Day at our domestic and international locations—stay tuned for upcoming blog posts on these events.
In the meantime, if you’d like to get involved in World Water Day, use Instagram to share one of your highlights by taking a picture with your mobile phone and tagging it #waterday or tweeting it with the same hashtag @Qualcomm_GA.
