The challenge reminds me of the thick Guinness Book of World Records I used to read as a kid. It officially noted the biggest, fastest, heaviest, tallest, heaviest – you get the idea – things in the world. Eventually it became popular on TV and Guinness museums opened up.
The book is fun to read and the ultimate device for shutting down those annoying “one uppers.” (Think you’ve never met a one upper? Check this.) So, in honor of the challenge, we thought we’d take a look at seven of the most interesting Guinness mobile records.
7. The first clamshell laptop: the GRiD Compass, designed by William Moggridge in 1979 for GRiD Systems Corporation.
6. The thinnest laptop computer: The Dell Adamo XPS measures just 9.99 mm, or less than .40” thick.
5. The largest functioning mobile phone: A Samsung SCH-r450 created by Samsung Mobile and Cricket Communications measuring 15’ w x 11.2’ h x 2.5’ d.
4. The most expensive mobile phone number sold at auction: 666-6666, sold at a charity auction in Qatar for $2.75 million in 2006. (I have to say it: It was a deal with the devil).
3. The most powerful mobile phone gun: All we know is that they are believed to be made in Croatia and capable of firing up to four .22 caliber rounds when the user dials 5-6-7-8. Oh come on, which phone maker is going to fess up to this?
2. The most expensive commercially available mobile phone series: The Ulysse Nardin Chairman sells for $13,000 to $130,000, depending on the model you choose.
And the top technology-related Guinness World Record is:
1. The farthest a mobile phone has been thrown: 314 feet, 5 inches by Chris Hughff at the 2007 UK Mobile Throwing Championships.
