The Evolving Smartphone Segment

As we approach Mobile World Congress (MWC), smartphones continue to be a hot topic with expected announcements by major handset manufacturers and new entrants. The increased competition and innovation is driven by the underlying growth opportunities for this segment. From 2011 through the end of 2014, Gartner estimates that approximately 2.5 billion smartphones will ship. This is an incredible number, considering that fewer than 300 million smartphones were shipped in 2010.

Iconic, high-end devices will continue to gain most of the press and play a significant role in the driving the market forward. However, meeting the shipment growth expectations will depend on the industry’s ability to further tier the smartphone segment. According to Gartner, growth of the low/mid tier smartphones are expected to grow 9x from 2009 to 2014, while the high end devices are expected to grow 3x.

So start looking for announcements across multiple tiers at MWC and stay tuned for a recap post after the event.
