5G NR—driven by Qualcomm—will redefine everything.

Our 5G development efforts are focused on creating a 5G network that takes on a much larger role than previous cellular generations—connecting new industries, enabling new services and empowering new user experiences. At the foundation of this next generation cellular network is 5G New Radio (NR), the global 5G standard for a new OFDM-based air interface designed to support the wide variation of 5G device-types, services, deployments and spectrum.

We’re expanding the boundaries of wireless.

5G NR will provide a unified design across diverse spectrum, services and deployments. We are also designing a flexible Next Generation (NextGen) network architecture.

Flexible Network Architecture

Scalable network to support an extreme variation of requirements.

5G NR promises to make wireless broadband indistinguishable from wireline with fiber-like performance at a significantly lower cost-per bit. But 5G NR will also scale to efficiently connect the massive Internet of Things, and enable new types of mission-critical services which require new levels of latency, reliability and security.

Getting the most out of the wide array of spectrum available.

5G New Radio (NR) is being designed to operate across a wide array of available spectrum regulatory paradigms and spectrum bands – from low bands below 1 GHz, to mid bands from 1 GHz to 6 GHz, to high bands known as mmWave. 5G devices will bring the next level of convergence, with the ability to work on licensed, unlicensed and shared spectrum concurrently.

Adapting to diverse deployments and topologies.

5G New Radio (NR) will support diverse deployments that will broaden the cellular ecosystem to more places and new entities. From traditional wide-area macro deployments by Mobile Operators that deliver ubiquitous coverage, to new indoor/outdoor hotspots that may be deployed and managed by a variety of entities. 5G NR will also bring new ways to connect, such as device-to-device (D2D) and multi-hop communications, that deliver new capabilities to cellular networks.

Designing a flexible, scalable network architecture.

In parallel to designing 5G New Radio (NR), we are also designing a flexible 5G NextGen scalable network architecture that will enable service providers to quickly and efficiently create new 5G services and verticals. The new NextGen architecture takes advantage of emerging virtualization technologies to generate network slices optimized for the target services or deployment types—all with a simplified and unified network management framework.

Designing 5G NR.

To meet the expanding global connectivity needs—in the next decade and beyond—we are designing a new OFDM-based 5G unified air interface. We are delivering OFDM-based waveforms and multiple access optimized for different use cases. The 5G NR flexible framework is also designed to efficiently multiplex 5G services and features with built-in forward compatibility.

New advanced wireless technologies.

5G NR introduces many key technology enablers that will bring vastly improved performance and efficiency, and here are just a few examples:

Mobilizing mmWave

New advanced technologies to deliver robust mobile broadband utilizing millimeter-wave (mmWave) bands above 24 GHz.

Massive MIMO

Advanced antenna technologies that enable many antennas at the base station—capable of 3D beamforming to increase coverage and capacity.

Shared spectrum

5G NR will build upon new spectrum sharing paradigms we are pioneering with LTE today to make the best use of all types of spectrum.

Advanced coding

New 5G NR channel coding design will be more efficient than today’s LTE Turbo codes at high data rates and low latency.

Grant-free transmissions

New Resource Spread Multiple Access (RSMA) design delivers optimizations for sporadic, grant-free uplink transmissions common in IoT communications.

Device-centric mobility

New uplink-based mobility management capability that can improve network efficiency, device mobility and device battery life.

Accelerating the path to 5G.

Qualcomm is leading the technology innovations designed to make 5G a reality. We’ve spent years working on new 5G designs, building on our long-standing expertise in 3G, 4G and Wi-Fi. We’re also collaborating with industry leaders across the mobile ecosystem to drive 3GPP 5G New Radio (NR) standardization along with impactful trials that will lead to timely commercial network launches.

Best-in-class 5G prototype systems and testbeds.

We have developed end-to-end prototype systems to test, demonstrate and verify our innovative 5G designs. These systems will also serve as a trial platform that will track 3GPP standardization progress closely to enable timely 5G New Radio (NR) trials.
